Just about to start my 1300 mile journey home in my first air cooled Porsche!
JUST picked up (grabbing a bite to eat) my new to me 87’ Carerra Targa. Pretty much original (hood and bumper repainted). Extremely well taken care of...Higher miles at 171K but runs excellent. Basic inspection went well. And at a great price!
Taking my time over the next two days...Will put in a few hours tonight!
On long trips in these older cars I always take a care package with me. Includes belts, fuses, relays, electrical tape, tire pump, a knife, duct tape, and a few minor tools.

..and a flashlight, my cars are ****** and never beak down when its light out
Congratulations on picking up a real jewel. I have an 89 guards red coupe. From your map it appears as though you are near me, and also that you track at Sebring in a much nicer track car than mine. LOL. If you need any input on good local mechanics for this car, send me a PM. I have two modern Porsches, and still elect to daily drive my Carrera more often than not. I just love it.
That's a super clean looking ride! Congrats! I took a very similar trip in September to bring home my 79' SC after I purchased it Ohio and drove it home to SW Florida. It was an awesome experience and I'm so glad I did it. I had waffled over having it shipped and was ultimately convinced to just fly up and drive it home and it was definitely the right choice. Enjoy every minute of it as you have some really nice roads ahead of you on the way down. Best of luck and I hope to see you at a PCA event down here in the Sunshine state!
Great ride home...Really got to learn and enjoy it. Swapped out tires today...Shocks, bushings, tune up, detail and redo tint next week. Then I should be good for a while!
Welcome back to the swamp! My car has something upgraded in the a/c but still isn’t comfortable in mid day temps here in Orlando. I’ve been told there is a “Griffiths” mod that makes it cold enough to hand meat in these air cooled cars. Have you heard about that mod? My local Indy researched and found it will be a $5k mod. I love my car so much that I’ll probably do it so as to have more useful months driving it down here in the land of perpetual summer.

Well mine supposedly has that. Seems decent, but I’m not sure it’s going to be enough for our summer heat. We will see!

Thanks! Great trip home. Tires were out of balance...Had to find that sweet spot. LOL. But other than that it was a great drive!
Going to get into it next week when the parts come (suspension, minor tune up, etc.). New tires today...What a difference.
congrats on both the car and a successful trip home! these cars really are special - 1000 mile road trips in a 50 year old car is in this day and age, somehow magical. I realize yours isn't quite that old, but in 20 years i hope you're still enjoying it!
