I may get flamed on this
But to my eye, the classic Porsche 911 shape is evolving back to the future - the old 928S4.
I've nothing against a 928, in fact I think they are way under appreciated.
It's just that I get the feeling that Porsche has a hidden agenda, to pursue what they planned would replace the 911 back in the eighties. It would seem that they, Porsche, albeit smitten, never truly relinquished this ambition, IMHO.
If I look at a 928S4 parked between, say an '88 911 and a '95 993, the 993 from the front looks more like a closer cousin to the 928S4 than its "88 911 parent. And the 996 only confirms my suspicions - only the roof sloop in side profile saves it. Maybe I've got a wonky eye?
I hope we don't loose the "911" classic profile origin all together.
On a side note, I've just come in from a balmy summer evening freeway cruise, Targa top off, with Winton Marsalis blowing that silky smooth Jas/Blues Horn of his, loud over the wind rush. Ahhhh, .....no, it wasn't enough! .....I think I need another fix .......see ya.
Cheers,
Sean.

To paraphrase Churchill, "don't attribute to conspiracy what is alternatively explained by stupidity." I like the styling of all 911's & the 928, but I HOPE Porsche isn't confusing them - I don't "see it". It is more appropriate for the Cayenne to borrow from the 928, & for the 911 to display its lineage back to the pre-war Berlin-to-Rome prototypes.
On your other point, we should ALL go Down Under for a balmy sunmmer evening cruise. Cheers!

If you look at the front-end styling of the '87 928S 4, you will see the 'signature' cues that influenced everything that followed - 944S2, 964 (somewhat), 968, 986, 993, 996, and Cayenne(?) maybe. Now that I think of it, those styling cues may have originated with the 959 ...
