They also make a 3 fuse small panel for the rear of the post-74 cars, could use that I suppose.....

If you do, pay attention to the built in bridges. I know Refuse sells these versions of a 3 fuse panel:

The 70-73 block has input pins 1 & 2 bussed together
The 74-83 block has input pims 2 & 3 Bussed together
The 84-89 block has input pins 1 & 2 & 3 bussed together

and I believe he can make you a 3 unbussed fuse panel if you ask him.

Thanks. I was thinking about a small panel as an option.

This thread definitely drifted from the original conversion to H4 to more about wiring and fuses. While certainly related, I'd like to get more info about what it takes to go from US DOT setup to the H4s on the hardware side. I have seen at least 10 different kits ranging from $200 to $800 each (which is ridiculous btw). Back in the day I converted my 80' Rabbit to H4s for about $25 each WITH 60/100 bulbs. It had a DOT setup as well. Does anyone have a nice visual DIY of what they did and where they found the best parts?

As I may have helped the conversation drift to fuses, I will describe my path to H4s. I have a 73 911 with sealed beams. I wanted to upgrade the headlights but retain the original sugar scoop look. I bought two Hella Headlight Conversion Kits from autohausaz.com ($109 total for the two kits with shipping) and since I needed to install headlight relays I decided to upgrade to blade fuses using the classicretrofit.com blade fuse panel that includes the relays (certainly overkill but have never liked the bullet fuses; one could, of course, just add the two relays.) I am pleased with the result, especially the headlight improvement. Installing the blade fuse panel was time-consuming and tedious.

Awesome, thanks. I have an 88 which doesn't have the sugar scoop (assuming means bucket-style?). Would I be able to do that? I think from what I have researched thus far, I will need an entirely new housing.

Not familiar with newer cars. If it has 7" sealed beams I think there are kits like the one I used but you should wait for advice from those who know your year.

This is what autohaus shows for an 88

$428 each, unless I am looking at the wrong part.

How about this Pelican kit? Although it says 74-89, when I check for an 88 911 it is unclear if appropriate.

When I converted from H5's to H4's I gathered up the following parts.
Qty (2) h4 headlights, (2) adapter harnesses, (2) h4 trim rings, attachment screws and other small parts.
My h4's were used and required some repair before installation, check the classifieds you might find a good used set.
Had the trim rings painted to match body color, h5 rings don't fit. Running 55 / 65 watt bulbs for now, will be installing relays before installing higher wattage bulbs.
There are relay kits available for 1989 and earlier 911's, 964's have a different fuse setup and a Rennlist member has put together a kit for them.
