Default Window Trim

The window trim on my 79 SC needs to be refinished (the black has faded to nearly all silver). I'm looking for advice on the best way to get the window trim back to the original black anodized. Also, can anyone advise me on how to remove the rear quarter window trim? Neither the 101 Projects book nor the Bently manual have any detail about removing the trim. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi, Robb

Try the article from Pelican Parts. I think they basically cover everything...

You're better off having the trim black powder coated. Anodize just fades in the sun, as you've already discovered. I had mine done 12 years ago and it still looks great.

On a 911, you can't remove the windshield or rear glass trim without removing the window. I would try sanding them down and repaining them after taping off the surrounding areas.

Powder coat is the best bet, but if you choose to paint any trim, use SEM Trim Black. It's the best color match out there.

I feel your pain.
my door handles and window trim look like crap.
the rest of the car is decent.
so, how does one have the trim powder painted without the risk of massive overspray?!?!?
mask the entire car? (I think not)
To be honest, I know several talented painters... but wouldn't trust any of them for fear of making the car look worse than it's current condition.

has anyone actually got pictures of their re powder painted door frame/trim/moulding?

please and thank you.

David:
Powder coating cannot be done on the car. The pieces have to be removed, sand blasted and painted at a specialty shop. It's baked at a high temperature, I think something like 400 degrees. A paint shop won't have the equipment or experience to do the job right. Some guys use black trim paint which looks ok when it's new but it's cheap and doesn't last. Your choice.

I too would like to see a picture of some trim pieces that have been powder coated. I've have a number of parts powder coated over the years, all by the same place. I've been more than happy with the results.....as they were just brackets. I don't know that I would want the same finish I've been getting on the outside of my car. Does anyone know if the finish is operator dependant? Or maybe what I've got is as good as it gets? Or.....?
