3.2 hesitation

3.2 hesitation
I have heard hesitation in the 3.2's is a common problem. A thread on systematically dealing with the problem would be great as would different causes of the problem. I have heard everything from sensors to simple things like cleaning the intake. The obvious things such as plugs, wires, cap and rotor are a no brainer and should be the first thing to replace/check.
I have a hesitation problem in my '84 3.2 (60,000miles)and have done the basics above but am looking to other "simple fixes" before letting the repair shop fish for the problem.
I am thinking of cleaning the intake but would appreciate anyone who has done this and may explain the best way to acomplish this and what is entailed.

My '86 (95k miles) hesitated occasionally until I had it serviced two days ago. New plugs, O2 sensor, fuel filter, air filter, and a badly needed valve adjustment.
Now the engine is noticeably stronger and smoother with no hesitation whatsoever. The difference is not subtle.
FYI - the O2 sensor and fuel filter are due to be replaced at 60k miles per the manual. Maybe that was the ticket.
