Acceptable oil usage...

Jeffrey:
As long as you are not using more oil than 1 qt per 1500 miles, your engine is OK.
15w-30 is an odd viscosity and we usually use a 15w-50 synthetic or a 20w-50 dino oil under normal conditions.

Synthetic usually leaks more in older engines as it flows more freely viscosity for viscosity. This can aslso result in slightly lower oil pressures but does not cause wear, at least in the engines I've had apart.

I have an 82SC, but I don't think the oil consumption numbers are that much different between the 3.0 and 3.2. I always thought consumption of about 1 qt. every 600 miles was good. I get 1 qt. every 500 - 600 miles, with a compression of 140 -150 across the board a leak down of less than 5%. I also have a slight leak. I think it just depends on the car and the driver, how you drive and under what conditions. For instance, oil consumption goes up in stop and go traffic. Just my 2 cents.

RC76 makes a valid point; oil consumption really depends on many factors about how you drive and under what conditions. For sure, viscosity affects oil usage.
Porsche's official line about oil consumption is that anything less than 1 qt/600 miles is OK. IMHO,...that is rather ludicrous as that would leave a mosquito-killing cloud behind you and most smog regulated cities & states will fail you for excessive smoke and high HC.

I'd say a quart every 1,000 with Mobil 1.
Don't forget, there can be "leaks" that don't drip on the ground. Look at the bottom of the case, and see if there's any residue. My 911 has a small leak somewhere up top, but it never makes it to the ground. I need to tighten those high pressure hoses : )
