Default Opinions on this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa?

Hey all, I'm looking at this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa at Colorado Springs Porsche. I'm looking for a good driver quality 1987-1989 911 and this one is local to me.

This car was in Florida for the first 7 years of its life, then moved to Texas, but the CarFax goes dark between 2002 and 2018. In 2018 it suffered hail damage which resulted in a significant refresh including paint. Porsche of Colorado Springs has a few thousand dollars worth of work into it.

At 100K I understand that these engines almost always need head work. Is that right?

I suspect that there's a bit of an inflated price given that it's being sold by a Porsche dealer.

I'd appreciate any guidance on price, know issues for these cars with this mileage, whether I should run for the hills given the hail damage and 16 years of unknown history. Any help is much appreciated.

My suggestion .... buy the owner. In this case, a lot of blanks and unknowns. Pay up in price and get the best sorted car that you can afford. Happy hunting.

Thanks, I was wondering about that car as well (I like the color), although I've been hoping to find a coupe as opposed to a targa. Seems like there are a lot more targas for sale than coupes.

Don't spend $50k on a car unless you're thrilled.
You don't like the repaint and the gap
You don't want Targa.
No service records.

3 strikes.

Dealer cars are always overpriced.
Don't settle at $50k
You settle at $25k

I bet that car looked pretty rough at one point. Brake fluid is low as it sits there, so will probably need new pads, or it has leaky fluid. probably just the tip of the iceburg.

If you want a coupe, hold out for a coupe

Like mentioned , hold out for THE car you really want ... especially for 50K !
Don’t get detered by the lack of service records , i’ve owned my 89 for 11 years and i have no service records to show for it , simply because i do
my own maintenance and the car gets nothing but the best of maintenance and parts.

The previous owner had a binder full of dealer ( generic in a barrel ) oil changes and battery replacements as well as dealer priced (expensive ) brake work ... the guy didn’t even know how to change a spark plug ... anyhow , do get a thorough PPI from a competent and knowledgeable shop before you spend lots of $$$ on any Porsche !
