Default Stripped Oil Plug - Help!

My Cheap set of tools have failed on me (bought a new set of Craftsman TODAY so this doesn't happen again), and the oil plug to the oil storage tank is now stripped. Any suggestions, so I can put some fresh Mobil 1 in?

Is the plug stripped, or are the threads in the tank stripped? A new plug is easy, but fixing the threads on the tank may be a bit of a challenge. If it is the threads on the tank, I would try a pick with a 90 deg. angle to fix the threads. Or, you might be able to track down a really big thread tap. Good luck!

Thanks guys - it's just the head of the plug (to change the oil) on the bottom of the storage tank (not the case). I'll tray to get my hands on a pic. Are there any special tools that work with stripped bolts?

You need a new plug or a very big thread dye to re-shape the threads. See my post above if you want a new plug.

Thanks - how much for them?

Also, how do you recommend I get it out? I tried the vice grips and didn't have any luck. There is still some shape to the bolt head, just the 15mm slides off of it during high stress.

Default Oil plug

Hi

If it is only the head of the bolt that is damaged, try using a pair of channel lock pliers or maybe a small pipe wrench.

Good luck

Pipe wrench or Craftsman has a set of very good nut extractors on sale for $36.

agentpennypacker-
I can send you a drain plug if you like, but it would probably be faster to order one from Pelicanparts.com or one of the other online parts suppliers.

For the plug, just run down to the dealer as I'll bet they have them lying around. To extract the bolt - use a small pipe wrench (as others have stated).

remember righty tighty, lefty loosey... i only say that because if you get ahold of it with vise grips (knowing the plug will be replaced) and really give it the what for it should come off. unless the hulk tightened it...
