I have a opportunity to purchase a 1988 911 Cab, 88,000 miles for $1,500.00; how ever there is a problem............
Two years ago as the owner was leaving his development he noticed black smoke coming from the engine area. (FIRE) Not wanting to get stranded he drove three blocks back home and put the fire out with a chemical fire bottle. Fearing the fire might not be out he then hosed the motor down for about ten minutes with a garden hose.
I looked at the car the next day and it appeared that a fuel line leak caused the fire. The owner said he had been smelling gas for a couple months but did not consider it important!!!!!!!!!! The fire was isolated to the left hand side of the engine area and melted or destroyed the elect panel but did not harm paint or interior panels.
Last week I ran into the owner and inquired about his car. He said he was selling it since he finally concluded after two years he was not going to get around to repairing it. I went by his house to inspect it and was surprised when he opened his garage door and the car was not there. Thats because it was stored in a corner of the back yard, uncovered and windows down. The position of the windows were not a problem since the top rotted through and the interior filled up with wet leaves. The rear bumper was damaged when he moved the car into his "storage area" by pushing it with his truck!!!!!!!
It would be easier to list what is left. Clear title, door panels and dash are intact. engine is now locked up, top is gone, paint is fare, seats, carpet shot, fire damage to electrics and fuel injection are damaged. I also assume there could be or were at some time animals living in it.
He is thinking about my offer. I was thinking of it for DE. This guy does not deserve to own this car. I want to rescue it.
a) No
b) i have a cab - they are great fun, but not ideal for DE
c0) you already know some of whats wrong with this "car", but think of well he must have taken care of it before it caught in fire...
I am assuming very little would be right. The engine would have to come out and disasembled. For the most part the interior is shot, and wiring and engine electrics are also toast.
If this guy was this dumb I have no doubt he never took care of the car.
I made the offer, we will see what happens. I am assuming that the entire car is junk. My idea is to build a speedster type car will a roll bar/cage to make it stiffer. If I don't go that route I will just part it out.
I did check the floor pan and there is not any serious rust.
