Default SC Door Speakers

Going to replace the speakers and head unit in my 78 SC. Not sure what will fit in the stock door location. There are curently pioneers in there they say 16MM on them which translates to about 6 1/4 inch speakers if I'm right. Does anyone know if 6.5's will fit?

Anyone have any recomendations. I like the Alpine Type R 6.5's but want to make sure that they will fit.

Thanks

Eric

Yes. 6.5's will fit easily. And so will the new Pioneer 6 3/4 (2 way) door speakers. They are more expensive than the 6.5 three and four way speakers. But they have more bass and much better sound reproduction, due to the more sophisticated crossover system.

(I have the new speakers in my 911... and I used to have the older 4 ways)

Not sure which measurement you guys are taking but if it's any help I just refurbished my doors completely and just out of interest measured my UK spec Targa door speaker hole and it was 5". But the actual dia' of the wideat part of the speaker where the reataining screws arewould be about 6" or so.

Do you have power or crank windows?

Most aftermarket speakers will give you problems when raising and lowering the window with a crank. Otherwise most 6" to 6.5" after market speakers sit on top of the panel and can be mounted with minor modifications. I had a set of Boston Accustics with seperate tweeter I modified the door and panel they fit great and sounded fantastic.

I have crank windows... and the both Pioneer 6 1/2's and now the new 6 3/4's fit with no major modifications. Very easy install.

What have you guys done in the back. Not many options without cutting the back panel. I'm getting 4 X 6 tomorrow and know I will be dissappointed.

I've got nothing in back. There's not enough room in the targa.

If anyone is looking for a fiberglass enslosure that will fit atop the seats in a 911 coupe, let me know. One of the stores I was at today has one they've had it for years and want to get rid of it. It was a pricey piece when new that will hold 6x9's or better. Let me know if you have any interest at my email jes1680@yahoo.com and I'll get more specifics.

I've done some more looking at door speakers. Turns out the stock door hole is 5 1/2 inches.

Most 6.5's that I've looked at won't fit without cutting the sheet metal.

MB Quart 6.5's
Alpine Type R's etc...

The baskets design is too wide.
Haven't been too impressed with the Pioneers that I've heard. Looking for something a bit nicer since I've only got the two door speakers and a sub.

Going to check out some Boston Acoustic 6.5's they are usually more shallow and hopefully have a slimmer basket, or I'll be going with the 5.25 MB Quarts.

Anyone have the 5 .25 MB Quarts in theirs?
