Default Gearbox fluid changes..

Is gearbox fluid change part of regular maintanecne for an '87 911?

As I browse all the records from the original owner...I'm not seeing that being done...

Lot's of oil changes, valve adjustments, rotor, plugs, wires, brakes, hoses, etc...but no mention of gearbox/transmission flush or changes.

Hmmm...

Default Gear box

Had mine done last fall 87 coupe, after purchase, Mobil One 70-90 Synthetic, or you can use the Swepco product. 3.7 liters If I remember and 70 dollars later, local knowledgeable Oil change place, The drain plug is magnetic, do look at it when they pull the plug to see if there is a lot of particles or little or none. My car has 100k on the clock, I would change not knowing history, peace of mind on an important component, and cheap insurance. My 2 cents. John

I'm the same as you Phattey. My 83 911 shows no history of a trany oil change. I purchased the car last month with 69,000 miles. I'm going to be doing a change next week and using Swepco. Better safe than sorry.

In the ''101 Projects'' book it says Swepco for 86 and earlier. For 87 and up with G50 tranny, they recommend a synthetic blend.

This book is worth its weight in gold.

Pull the fill plug first!!! If you can't get the fill plu out, you don't want to drain it. I had to take my fill plug out with a clench wrench because the recessed hex plug was stripped inside. A clench wrench is sort of like a basin wrench with one fixed and one movable jaw that bits into the side of the plug, it destroys the plug, but gets it out.

If you can change your engine oil, you should be able to change your tranny oil. As noted above:

-Drive car for 30-40 minutes to warm tranny oil (it flows easier);
-I was lucky and had "outy" drain and fill plugs so a standard wrench worked for me. If I had "inny" plugs, I would have replaced with "outy's" to make the job easier next time;
-Be sure the car is level before you drain or refill;
-Remove the fill plug first;
-Remove the fill plug first (not a typo);
-Warm replacement oil (Swepco in 901/915 tranny is a godsend!) while you are reming the plugs and drianing the oil;
-To fill, I use a funnel with 3-4 feet of 3/4" tubing. I add slowly until it overflows out of the fill hole; and
-Use anti-seize on the plugs when you reinstall.

Including driving around, you should have the whole thing done in 1-3 hours.

My personal suggestion....wear latex gloves. I can't think of something that smells worse than gearbox oil. I have a few interesting stories about it.....
