Default Brake upgrade -79 911 SC Targa

Hi all,
We are putting an 3.2l Carrera engine into an -79 SC Targa. Engine have ITB's, cams etc. Approx 270-300hp.

We need brakes to suit this build. Will the 3.2l brakes fit right onto the -79?
Is there any other options for upgrade? Front and rear.

Car is on Fuchs wheels, so space is limited. The car will never be track driven eather. So 350mm brakes are not needed.

Thanks

if not tracked, the stock brakes will be fine

What size wheels will you be using? (that determines brake options)

Best upgrade is still 930 all around
but for your use Carrera 3.2 front calipers and rotors are a bolt on and provide a little more thermal headroom. leave the rears stock to preserve bias

both of the above fit in 7x15 Fuchs or bigger, the 930s will need to have the fins ground down a bit on 7s or use a small spacer, You really want at least 7 & 8 anyway, 15 vs 16 can be debated, 8 & 9.5 is ideal though hard to accomplish in 15 or 16 especially w/ Fuchs

generally street cars don't need anything more than stock brakes w/ good fresh fluid and good pads

Thanks for reply.

Reason we need to upgrade the brakes is by the law. The car needs to be approved road legal, and we then need to have brakes to suit the engine.

So the, lets say, -89 3.2 Carrera is bolt on?

We are going for the KW V3 for g-model.
I do not know the spesifications on the rims now, the car is not at our shop at the moment.

930 Brakes are a great upgrade but expensive. I went another way and have Boxster front calipers on my '83 SC with Carrera rotors for better cooling and the same diameter. I also left the rear brakes original. I run Padgit (sp) blue pads up front and stock in the rear. I did upgrade the master cylinder and have an adjustable brake bias control but it is in the front trunk. The car is tracked ( with my neck not anymore) and the engine is a custom stroked 3.2 developing a minimum of 220 rear wheel hp on a stingy dyne. I do run 16" Fuchs and there is plenty of brake clearance

Thanks

As far as rules for approval go - we'll probably be fine with the 3.2l Carrera setup at front.

So the origina calipers and brakes from, let's say, a -88 model Carrera 3.2 will bolt right up to the -79 911 SC Targa 3.0l?

Yes, straight on swap

The rears as well?
Might have to change the master cylinder as well?

Rears are a direct swap too, master cylinder is the same from 1978-89.

I guess you would want to add the brake bias reg though.

The reason to change brakes usually has nothing to do w/ brake torque, what you are after is better thermal endurance. front 3.2 Carrera brake set has exactly the same brake torque character as stock SC, what is better is the thermal headroom. heat issues are generally confined to the front, the rears are there for balance aka brake bias. Best bias is w/ stock or 3.2 Carrera fronts and stock SC rears. When 3.2 carrera rears are use bias goes way to the back and an aggressive p/v is needed to compensate. For street use his can be ok as it balances pad wear better between the front and back. for performance use this is less than optimal as the lag introduced by the p/v can cause high g stops to be more exciting than w/ SC rears.

yes 3.2 carrera is a straight bolt on swap in front, no other changes are necessary.

SC and 3.2 Carrera use the same 20.6mm boosted m/c so, no, you don't have to change it. Some guys do prefer the pedal that a 930 23.8mm m/c provides but while it is higher and harder(very comforting and easier to modulate) it also requires more leg which some won't like. The 930 m/c is also a straight bolt in swap.
