Default 1970 911 Street Tire Size/Brand Advice - 2019

Hi All,

I'm sure this has been discussed many times...but I couldn't find anything too current. The last Yokohama tires I bought 10 years ago for my 1970 911E are no longer made. So I'm looking for some current advice for street tires. No track use, but high quality street tires for aggressive canyon carving.

I have 15x6 fuchs

Current tires are 205/60 15 (seemed like a good fit, no complaints)

Not many performance tires to choose from in that size on Tire Rack. There is a Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 that looks OK.

In 195/65 there seems to be more to choose from.

Thoughts on the Pirelli CINTURATO 185/70 ?

Thanks!

Jordan

You got some good info already.

For now, I am taking Ed Mayo's advice and I ordered some Goodyear Eagle Sport A/S's for my deep sixes. 195/65/15. Not as vintage looking, admittedly, but easier to source and he and another friend with a 71 coupe are running them and very happy.

Yes, the CN36 are not as easy to get, but any pirelli dealer should be able to get them. I'm lucky in that the US Distributor Lucas Classic Tire is 10 minutes from me.

Thanks...yes those Goodyear's look pretty good. They are 1/3 of the price of the Pirelli's....tempting.

Oh, I love the idea of those CN36s and almost ordered them!! Avons are tempting too. Goodyears (I got the V-rated model) are sitting at Mayo's waiting on the wheels to arrive from refinishing...

They will mount them and I will pick them up.

I have the opposite issue. I have the deep6 wheels I got refinished in my garage waiting for tires. Should be here this week, slow boat I guess. At least they'll be fresh stock. My flat6 are sold, buyer was nice enough to work with me on the delay!

I got the CN36s, which look great on chrome steelies and mounted on the car. However, car still not on the road yet, so I can’t report on driving characteristics. It is getting very hard to find old school guys who can mount tires onto 6x15 rims without damaging the bead.

For those in SoCal - "Cowboy Tire" in Long Beach. Don't judge a book by it's cover. :-) These guys are awesome. This is where Lucas sends all their tires and they do work for many of the classic car restorers in the area. They know 911s and 356 very well.

I'm lucky to have Mayo's down the road from me. They deal with deep sixes on a very regular basis... : )

195/65-15 won't handle as well on these early cars. They might mean less locking up your wheels under braking and less wheel spin, but they wont corner as well. more modern have the wrong kind of carcass structure. in 1970 70% profile tyres had only just been invented.

the best 3 tyres are:

Avon CR6ZZ a great road race tyre. a carcass built for historic racing with a road/race compound. though the tyre has a period shape, the tread pattern is modern.

Michelin XWX period OE looks and drives the way it should. Porsche and Ferrari didnt fit these in the '70s

Pirelli CN36 again original equipment, this is the tyre that won the back to back tyre testing. and this is the tyre Porsche themselves recomend.

the only reason to buy anything else is cost, but you are saving money at the expence of handling
