Question Wannabee 911 owner...

...interested in a Targa, and don't want to spend a fortune. What is the forum's opinion regarding the best years? What about mileage?

What's your budget? This will dermine the model years and mileage?

Let's us know. It's a little too board right now to give correct information.

Good luck,

Budget is up to 20k max...but I wouldn't mind spending less. Looked at and drove an '82 that was in nice shape...asking price was around 14k. The car had 160k miles.

'78-'83 with the 3.0L engine will run 12-16 with some priced higher and some lower, but you should be able to get a good deal in that range. And for the '84-89 you should be able to find plenty in the 14-20K range with some really good examples. Make sure you do your homework, get a PPI done, and get the best one you can. high miles aren't necessarily bad, but low miles can be good. Get a car with all records all the way back.
Good Luck and have fun.

PS make sure you listen for windnoise at speed in any targa you drive. Getting a targa restored properly isn't inexpensive. If the top needs to be redone budget $1000-1500 to have someone do the job right instead of just getting it recovered.
