Unhappy Scary first day

Today was my first day with my 1988 Carrrera Cab (commemorative edition). What a great ride!

While making a 90 degree right hand turn, with semi-hard acceleration the steering wheel locked and wouldn't come back to center! I was able to stop before going off the road, but it was CLOSE. Just before I came to a full stop, the steering wheel unlocked, and all was normal.

I was able to cause the same thing to happen 3 more times, but was expecting it. Under easy acceleration, no lock up. Also, when turning left, no problems.

The ppi revealed 2 things, one of which was the high beam/turn signal switch needing replacement. Could that switch have anything to do with this problem? (This car does not have power steering)

Any help is appreciated.

Was it a private sale? If so, you have to know that this has happened to the previous owner...I can't imagine how they conciously didn't disclose this defect. Sorry I can't help much with the diagnosis, apart from the facct it sounds like its in the ignition switch (ie: its steering wheel lock when you take the key out, but yours isn't recognizing that the key is in...)

I would really look into that ASAP. I agree with AHEDAU and think you should contact who ever sold you the car. I hope they did not have any idea about this problem, because that is just dangerous to be selling a car like that to someone without telling them about it. Best wishes and keep us posted. - Jay Gratton

No, the sale was from a dealer in New Jersey, and probably something they weren't aware of. ...I think.

Sound scary. Ok when are the pictures coming? Love to see the CE as I have the CE Coupe. Hopefully you can figure out the problem.

bad steering rack? Get it fixed ASAP. That sounds like an accident waiting to happen. I'd take it back to the place you bought it, especially with something as dangerous as that...

Oh - and Diamond Blue is the bomb!

Did the dealer do the PPI by chance? Oh and didn't see they were so far away.

No, PPI was done by a mechanic recommended by a PCA member in New Jersey... (his mechanic)

Pics coming tonight.

I don't know about NJ but in MA you can make the dealer (seller) fix that kind of defect for free. We call it the "Lemon Law", and that is why it is sometimes a lot easier to trade your car in than sell it.

the lemon laws in NJ have nothing on making the dealer fix that sort of thing. especially on a used car.
