A tale of a tail...
I have posted a "wanted ad" for a tail for my 81 sc. I seem to get mostly "turbo" tail responses from later cars. (84 and up). Wasn't there a sport tail with a less agressive look that is proper for my car?
What is the general opinion on cars that did not come with tails and were installed later. Is there a downside? I think they look very cool - However you can't beat the look of a stock "SC". I intend to keep my original decklid so I can swap back a any time.

Grand Prix:
There also was a Carrera tail that was used on the '84 - '89 (and 964 RSA) models that is less 'aggressive' than the large Turbo tail. The Carrera spoiler does not have the rubber side sills like the Turbo (tea tray) spoiler. I have also noticed SC's with rear spoilers that look similar to the early Turbo Carrera spoilers ('76 and '77 Turbos). Again, not as agressive as the more modern Turbo spoiler (used from '78 to '94) and really fits the SC 'age'.
If you keep your original rear deck lid and buy a new deck lid to bolt the spoiler to, I see no reason that your car would loose any value. The next owner (or you) can go back to a stock look easily. I think adding factory parts is probably viewed as better than adding aftermarket parts (though some aftermarket tails might be just as good as the Porsche parts).
If you decide to install a tail on the rear of your car, you must also install the front rubber spoiler to balance out the aerodynamics. With only a rear spoiler, your car might be unstable at higher speeds due to the greater downforce at the rear.
Hope this helps,
Jay

From what I found, the only tail that was available was the full rubber one. Until they came out with special addition Weissach addition. But it was only available on the special addition.
IMHO, the only car they would look good on is GP White or silver.
I'll be selling my rubber tail and lid in the coming month. And the lid is GP White.

I'm thought that the Carrera ('84-'89) style tail was available as an option in at least part of the Sc model run. It would be the best looking tail for your SC. As stated earlier you definitely need to install a front spoiler with the rear spoiler unless you never drive highway speeds. With only the rear your car will be like a teeter totter with a fat kid on the back. With the reduction of lift in the back the lift in the front will actually increase creating an extra light, loose, flighty feeling in the front end and steering at highway speeds.

Thanks for the replies.I agree that buy keeping the stock deck lid there should be no downside if I want to swap back. Cary when you are ready to sell your tail - drop me some photos. Sellwire@snet.net. With all the black trim it would look great on a white car. Thanks Again.

Here's a link to a photo of my 86 Carrera (came with no tail) with a tail on it. The previous owner put it on, so I don't know the part number or what the "name" of it is, but it is most definitely not a turbo tail...

The "whale tail" spoiler was available from 1975, and requires installation of the front air dam to maintain forward-aft aero lift balance. The Turbo "whale tail" for later models accommodates the intercooler, so if looking for one be sure to get the proper one for your car. My son's '93 964 also has the whale tail, and it appears to be identical to the one on my '89. BTW, this is my first Porsche ... son's is his third.

GPW911, give Michael Shaw a call (MA Shaw) and consider the one-piece Carrera tail option (no rubber), it really set my car off quite a bit...let me know if you want a pic, ah heck...I'll post one when I get home.
You will notice, I too have a GP White 911, albeit 964 style, still would look great on your car, and it's only $450...might I add I received a very high quality piece from MA Shaw...good people - he even threw in the 930 tail/base gasket from Porsche, made the install look "complete".
Sorry I don't have a "rear view" of the tail, but as you might be able to tell...it is a Carrera tail, the one most are speaking of, except it is one-piece w/no rubber, I think it sets the car off perfectly - especially being that it is white.
