Post 1977 911s Targa 4-sale

I know of a person selling this '77 911s Targa. Car is not in great shape. From what I can see, it needs:
drivers side-lookes as though he met a guardrail??-fender, door, rear quarter. Hood and trunk(engine) lid were not damaged. Pass side wheel is at about 80* angle-probably from the hit on drivers side. Has the Fuch rims- black with chrome spoke style. I think it was 108,000 miles-not sure, but can check again. Seats are perfect-as in- no tears and I believe were leather. Has original floor mats in brownish red color?? Not sure of engine shape, but was told it was a car that looked to be taken care of. Interior looks almost perfect except for the faded color. I don't know alot about 911's, so this is about the most I can say. I did notice some surface rust around the battery area-probably from battery acid. He wants $4800 for the car. Bad thing is- I can't even rember the color of it even though I saw it earlier today. Car is located in NW Pennsylvania

You must get a pre purchase inspection from a Porsche specialist including a compression test and a head stud torque.
If the head studs have not been time-serted, they have or will pull out of the engine case. A '75-'77 911 is generally considered to be the least desirable model of 911 due to the narrow fenders but large bumpers, 2.7 engine with aforementioned problem, thermalreactors generating extra heat, etc.
The car may be worth more like $4.80 depending on it's service history and potential lack of upgrades.

John:
I would pass on this car unless you can pick it up less than $2,000. I wouldn't pay more than that. If you buy this car for $4,800, count on at least $5K for the body work and a decent (not great) paint job because you will end up painting the whole car. ( I am probably on the low end of this estimate). That puts you at $9,800 invested and you still haven't addressed the damaged suspension and anything else you might find when your mechanic gets it on a lift. When I was looking for my 911 in 1999, every car I looked at needed at least $1,500 worth of work. This car could turn into a bottomless pit. You could end up spending at least $12K on this car. You could find a nice SC in that price range.

I just brought a 76 Targa euro with a 4spd trans.It has about 117,000 miles(it's in KM).The engine had
a complete documented $8500 rebuild at a reputable porsche shop 37k ago with all the upgades. The
4spd trans shifts very smooth, better then most 5spds I test drove. It also has the five blade fan but
runs very cool with the standard front oil cooler.
I'm the third owner, the previous owner had it for 18yrs and supplied me with full documenation for
the life of his ownership( he brought a 93 coupe).
The seats need to be redone but the rest of the interior is exc.The body is straight and the paint looks
good but there is some minor rust on the body.It will probaly need a respray in a couple years to be
perfect. It has cookie cutters with new low end tires. The targa top needs a new liner.I paid $6000
which I thought was a fair price, considering the work it will need in the future and 76 4spd euro cars
aren't the most sought after porsches.I agree with everyone else 4800
is way too much too pay even if you do all the work yourself.

I agree with all of the posts above. This might be a car to run away from. Just from your brief description, I see a lot of $$$ to be spent to get it nice. Plus, (as everybody else has mentioned already) the 2.7's are not the most desireable and suffer from depressed prices due to their inherent problems. If you had to sell it after you got it all repaired correctly, you would really be upside down on the car. A damaged 2.7 isn't worth too much unfortunately...

Steve Z: Congradulations on your 911 purchase! It sounds like you got a nice 911 for a nice price.

In the context of my response to "should I buy a poor quality 911?", here is what some adventurous soul (though maybe not a first timer) with skill & "free time" looking for a project might do with such a car, if it could be bought at around $2K like Carrera51 says... (btw, you never stated, does it or does it not run?)

a) drop in a good used 3.0 or 3.2 engine.
b) convert body to a cab, w/ aftermarket kit.
c) maybe convert to widebody while fixing guardrail incident.

Inform yourself intimately about the car, be very careful about your budget, and expect the above to run over $10K in parts before all is said & done. Oh yes, it could go all to hell too, once you are in the midst of it.
