Default Mag Case 2.4 -> 2.7 Build

I have been unable to confirm details .. calling experts ..

Case Savers are recommended but is there sufficient spigot wall thickness when boring 92 to 97mm spigots to accept the Case Saver threaded O/D? It looks like the thread would almost show in the spigot bore ..

Yessir, there is. I've done literally thousands of these since 1973.

Case Savers (and never Timecerts!) should always be used for this application.

Engines that will see over 7K should be shuffle-pinned and ALL Magnesium cases should have the parting lines machine flat again and the main bearing centerlines bored back to standard..

Great .. thanks for the prompt reply!

Some further queries .. for single plug 9.8:1 max CR, do I need to use ARP or similar studs or would standard steel be OK ?? I'm using Aluminium / Nikasil cylinders which expand a bit when hot.

Hopefully using Curil T will avoid leaks between cylinders and spigots .. I'm also thinking the heads ought to have a sealing ring installed into a machined groove to avoid leaks?

Thoughts?

Use steel studs for a 2.7. Cheap & very reliable providing all the case work is done. Strict control of oil temps is crucial for any mag cased engine to live a long life.

I never use ANY sealant on base gaskets. Ever.

Each & every 2.7 cylinder already has CE rings and all 2.4-2.7 heads have the grooves for these things. Nothing further is needed.

Thanks again for replies! I should have been more clear .. I am not using 7R cases .. mine are 3R & 4R .. they don't appear to have as large spigot land on other cases I have seen .. are 90mm pistons / 97mm spigot bores still OK?

Yes, no problem.

I would make every effort to balance every reciprocating and rotating component as closely as possible to help reduce vibratory stresses on that case.

OK, great! Thanks for helpful advice again Steve.

I guess I should sort out an oil cooler .. I understand '72 had a rear Fender Mounted cooler .. might be a simpler install ..??

Question for Steve or others:
my 71 w/ a 2.7 has no fender/secondary cooler. Now, the engine runs good, 180-200 temps. But, I think I will want a secondary cooler.

My understanding is the basics you need:
updated thermostat connection/housing
the piping to the front
an oil cooler in the front

Is there a specific setup / kit / brand of these you prefer?

l put an Elephant Racing cooler in my ‘73. Very happy with it. Piping from the tank to cooler has fins to help cooling and an air fitting to blow out the extra 2 qts. of oil left in the lines during an oil change. They should have a kit to fit your application .

crossover pipe
long pipes to front
front cooler

Question: Did this fit on your car w/o issue? ie plug and play? Did it require a motor drop or fender removal?

I had planned to install it, but other circumstances (a house move) dictated that I delegate it to my shop. The only issue was that I did not get the correct crossover, other than that there weren’t any issues. They installed it with the fender on (I think it would have been more difficult to install with the fender off , if I recall correctly). I don’t think a motor drop is required either.
