Default Factory speedometer in 1978 930...

Hi guys,

New to the forum here...looking for a nice well documented 78 (or 79) 930- which will be my first foray into the Porsche brand. I’ve looked at a number of them and they have all had a 150 mph speedo. One 78 I’ve looked at claims really low miles, however it has a 180 mph speedo in it- Not sure if this is a red flag that the original was swapped out and replaced by this one...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

J.G.

I cannot say for sure what the correct one should be for that turbo, however all VDO gauges are date stamped on the back. Comparing that date to the date on the VIN sticker will give you a good idea if it is original or not.

The speedos are known for frequently breaking and being replaced. Seen it mentioned a lot. Not sure which would be right for the cars you are looking at but a replaced speedo is definitely not uncommon.

Highly unlikely the speedo in a '78 Turbo would only read to 150mph since the top speed on the that car was 165 for the USA MODEL.

150 MPH is the correct speedo for 78 930, the later 79's used a federally mandated 85 MPH version

Thanks...that's what I was thinking. I'll see if they have any service records which could provide some/any form of mileage documentation or proof of a speedo swap.

Low miles are only important if car is pristine and original, the worst thing you can do with a 930 is to not drive it.

Are you sure about that? I researched it once, and I think the 85 mph units were only mandated starting in September 1979 until around March 1982.

Mark
mark,

You are correct the 79 930 had a longer than normal build year as model was to be discontinued after 79. The 85 MPH speedo's were used in approximately the last 400 cars

Thanks, I didn't realize they built the 1979 930's that late in the year.

My Euro 930 has its Km speedometer that pegs at 300 KM...highest I have ever had it was 190.

300 Kilometers per hour = 186 Miles per hour

Not sure of the significance of the red tic mark at 50 Km. Anyone know?
