Pitfalls of car in Storage
Looking at a 1995 911 that was in storage for 9 years. Has been “recommissioned” with tune-up work done. Is a car that been in storage a red flag? Is there risk of significant mechanical issues?
looking to buy my first 911 and want an air cooled, but don’t want to buy a car that needs a major engine issue.

No, but all rubber items are 9 years older. Fuel hoses, tires & brake hoses are safety items; some other seals may not have gotten the "exercise" they need but that is not a biggie.

Id also check to see if its been hit
If its a good price and it needs a few things fine
It would be a good idea to get a good pre purchase inspection
300 bucks could save you 50k

If it was properly prepped before going into storage, there shouldn't be an issue, but a PPI should uncover any problems. It's most the rubber items that should be looked at closely.

gas with stabilizer goes bank gunks up
rubber goes bad .It dries out tires get flat spots.
Oil goes bad it breaks down
Cars are ment to be driven. Once I saw a properly prepped dry motor.
Most people get bored or sick and it just sits.
If its a steal jump on it. If its reasonable priced get a ppi
Ill take a high milage car with service records any day

id never take an air cooled to a dealer ... unless they have a specific classic division with an old guy with experience, those guys would not have a clue ( plus the rates are insane ) . your best bet would be an independent factory tech that worked as a tech in a dealer 30 years ago . HE will know his stuff.

How many miles does the car have? Also how many shakedown miles since coming out of hibernation? What work has been done since?
Unless you can pick it up for under market and it passes a PPI I would look into finding a car that hasn't sat for a prolonged period of time.

i had an old mercedes early 70s my mechanic for that car was a factory tech in 70s for mercedes and knew that car in and out. He has his own shop since 1990. It was nostalgic for him to work on that car, he loved it and always gave me a good price too.
I highly recomend an independent shop ppi, or someone that travels and specializes in air cooled 911's best money you can spend.
Long story short before I did alot of my own work and have a friend who does my work, i brought my car to the dealer to have both axles changed, they broke, the dealer dident not torque them right 2 bolts ended up falling out and very close to the whole thing falling out. Horrible never again. I'm sure they know the never cars

Search Grady Clay on the Bird. This is not simple. More to it than an engine that has just been rebuilt.
Search Grady Clay and engine storage. He was a professional Porsche mechanic and racer. Very respected.
