Wish I had a better, more definitive, reason why I had all those problems a few weeks ago -- but the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong -- and the problem hasn't re-surfaced.
Did the 45k service -- plus the car's first 4-wheel alignment. What a difference. The car is a bunch less jittery on the highway. Also replaced the rear tires (front's had been replaced by the prior owner 500 miles earlier.)
I'm going to chalk the whole thing up to the 10 degree temps, an old fuel filter and water in the gas line. I'm sure one of them is the reason.

My car does exactly the same, but only during the cold winter spell, after a few minutes it is fine (I have no garage, so you can expect the winter elements to go for your car)
I wouldn't worry about it because once spring is here I'm sure it will be fine.
