1976 911 project value (two owners 55k miles)
I have a chance to purchase a two owner 1976 911 with 55,000 miles on it that's been stored inside since 94. The body looks great it has a matching number engine that has been increased to a 3.4I think that is not installed, an additional motor and multiple sets of wheels that are all included.
I grew up with air-cooled beetles so I have an idea of what to expect for the restoration which I hope will be minimal to make it road worthy.
I think this is a great opportunity to get a straight body 911 but I don't want to overspend what is a fair price for this? What should this cars price limit be in a realistic market?
I go to look at it this weekend, the seller is asking 15k right now from my friend who found it. The down side is I'll have to buy it from my friend who wants to flip it so I think the price will be closer to 20k for me from my friend (pending actual discussion and proper valuation of the car). Hagerty values are posted below along with pictures of the car.
I'm excited for the opportunity but trying to remain rational and educated.
Thanks!
Shawn

Sorry I've edited the original post for clarity, I believe the car to be rust free and straight with a clear title.
Yea the friend thing has yet to be worked out, money and friends isn't ever fun even more so that he is pretty much family so treading lightly. Worst case scenario I don't buy it for him he makes more money to buy his kid a car and life goes on.

This looks to be a very solid value. I would buy it myself. What's the goal? Get it running or leave it as is? I just bought a 1974 that I'm stripping to hot rod. This would sell for $25,000 in California. If it has two motors I'd be interested in one of them. If you have any questions let me know, I'm not an expert by any means and there are lots of people on here who are and of course a lot that are not. If you have any questions let me know. If it has no rust you are way ahead fo the game. The paint looks good and the body panels appear to be very straight. These are a big bonus.

This appears to be a good deal. Two motors and a solid chassis. Agree with the above comment about CA having an additional premium due to smog exempt (if manufactured in 1975)

I am not sure what a realistic market is anymore. Folks seems to over pay for these cars often. The mileage is ok but the condition of this car is not. It has two motors but you
don't know the condition of either. I do not know what your expectations are for this car and what your budget is......
I would not spent a dime more than $15K and that was after I knew both engines and the transmission were is good condition and rebuildable.
Everyone has their own opinion on this and I would say that due to specific circumstance most are correct........

Something isn’t right in your details. You can’t mske a 2.7 into a 3.4. I’m guessing the extra engine is the original 2.7 and the 3.4 was originally a 3.2. Value of the car depends on these details. Who built the engine? Buildsheet? You say fresh and uninstalled? Just the engine could be worth $15-20k. More details are required.

From his first post. a 76 numbers matching engine is a 2.7. He indicates he thinks that engine was made into a 3.4. I am skeptical. I suspect the additional motor is the stock motor that's just been removed, likely because it needs a rebuild after getting cooked by all the original smog stuff. 55k rebuild on the smog constrained middies was common. I am guessing the 3.4 is built on a 3.2, which is an easy and common conversion. Might even have some nice Max Moritz Mahles in it if it was done a decade or two ago. I think this car is quite interesting and could be a great value at $20k. It just requires some homework, very simple homework. Get the type and serial numbers off both engines and look them up or post them. And if possible, get more build details on the 3.4 and exactly why the stock engine is sitting on a pallet.

car appears solid.
1976 S is the bottom of the barrell in terms of price in the 911 air cooled food chain.
It is worth 15k.
Give your friend $1000.00 cash finders fee.
Take another $15k and dump it into getting the car back on the road.
