Default 1988 911 Staggered Wheels Question

I have a 1988 Cabriolet. It has the Fuchs. The tires are 225/50/16 on all 4 corners. Does that mean I have the same size wheels front and rear or was it possible to put the same size tires on staggered wheels?

TIA!

Ray

I ran 8 and 9s on my 89 Carrera

You can stagger

I did roll both front and rear fender lips

Go big

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to keep it stock and I think it came with 205/55/16 in front and 225/50/16 in rear. Is that correct?

Did you check left and right. I have a friend who's dad tried to rotate the tires on his 89 and ended up with 2 225s on one side and 2 205s on the other. if you take the wheels off the part number and sizes are forged into the back of the spokes, so would the best for absolute confirmation.

That's what I've got on my '85, as it came originally. 16x6" front, 16x7" rear. Most common setup for the non-turbos around that year. 15" may have technically been the standard size (maybe this was on the slightly earlier years?), but I think the 16" was far more common making it the de facto standard. As far as keeping it "stock," I think any Fuchs 16" setup would fit that description, as long as they are staggered: 6+7, 6+8, 7+9 were all common factory options in that era.

A non-staggered 911 of that era would be pretty unusual.

I agree with all the comments above. Check all 4 tires to be sure they really are all the same, rather than having two rear wheels on the left side and two front wheels on the right side. Then if the tires are all the same, remove the wheels to see if the wheels are the same (16x7 probably). If that's what you have, somebody probably made a mistake at some point. If you do have all 7" wheels, you should then try to swap one pair of 16x7 for either a 6, 8, or 9, putting the wider one on the back of course. More rubber in the rear is important for handling stability.

And while you're at it, inspecting those wheels, probably a good idea to photograph the markings and post them up here. The more knowledgeable people on here will be able to detect a replica, in case you might have one.

The 7 and 8s or 8 and 9s are factory correct options that could be ordered when spec ordering car.

I did with my 89 so I am pretty sure an 88 could have been ordered that way.

Without a build sheet no way to know how car was spec'd

to me 6 and 7s sit so very far under the fenders it looks odd

My 88 had 16" factory 7 and 8's. I removed them but the factory decal indicating the sizes is still in place.

Std for all '88 Carrera was
6 & 7 x15, 195/65 & 215/60
same tires were used on optional 7 & 8 x15
most in the US were delivered w/ 6 & 7 x16, 205/55 & 225/50

only the turbo & turbo look used 7 & 8 x16, 205/55 & 225/50 for '84 & '85, This changed to 7 & 9 x 16, 205/55 & 245/45 for '86-'89

I have 7s all around. But wider tires in the back and a spacer with longer studs
