Post Ignition Incompatibility Problem

I'm in the process of fitting my ’72 2.4 with carbs into an ’81 Targa. I’ve run into a problem with the connector for the CDI box. The 2.4 comes with a 4 pin connector. The ’81 has a 6 pin socket. Is there anything I can do to get the ignition on the 2.4 motor to work in the ’81? Apparently there is a difference in the type of distributor the ‘81s used (breaker-less). I’m dying to get the car on the road. I’ll consider all reasonable options. Would an MSD system resolve the issues? Thanks for any advice. Rich Lorenz

Rich:

You'll need either an MSD and matching coil or the older 3-pin Bosch CDI to make this work.

You might need an older tach, too. I'd try the SC tach into the MSD, first tho. Sometimes it works.

Steve,
Thanks for the advice. I purchased an MSD system yesterday. We'll see if it works this weekend...I hope.

Steve, spent the day hooking up the MSD. The motor fired for the first time in 12 years. Wow, what a sweet sound. I spent the better part of 2 hours trying to get the tach to work. No joy; even with the Tach Adapter that MSD sells. I think I'm going to try and borrow a '73 tach and give it a try. Thanks again, Rich

Hi Loren:

Good plan,...

One thing tho, SC tachs sometimes need the tach adaptor, MSD 8920 and connect as follows: Red goes to the ignition switch; Black goes to ground; White goes to the tach output on the ignition box and Purple goes to the tach.

You would have had fair less problems and a more reliable ignition system
in the long run by using a Bosch unit versus the mickey mouse one.

Have Fun

Says who!

BTW, I've been to Disneyland many times and I never knew they sold Ignition systems. Boy, if a Burger and fries costs $ 10.00, just what should I expect to pay for a MSD system, there.

These are very important facts to know.

Lorenfb, a more constructive comment would have taken more thought and knowledge? Would you care to share with all of us why you made such a broad and all-encompassing statement?

Because his business is repairing and selling old Bosch units.

Go figure

The Bosch units are straight forward to hookup:

Points;

three pins - points, +12, & coil, case to ground

Mag Pickup;

six pins - 7, 31b is pickup, +12, coil, & ground

Simple isn't it?

Good Luck

Rumor has it that the Electromotive crank-fired ignitions work pretty well.

One wire for +, one for ground. One nice weather-proof cable from the sensor to the coils.

No moving parts.
