Default Wheel fitment

I have an 85 M491 In looking at the Bentley book I see where the 86 has 9" wheels in the rear, and a larger tire. I have 8" on the rear and they do not fill out the wheel well. I don't want to use spacers to move the 8" out.

Has anyone simply upgraded to the 9" rears and went to perhaps 265x45s without rubbing problems.

Thanks

Larry,

I think all the tubo's and TL's had spacers. The 9" only sits about 3/8" further outboard than the 8".

The 9s will go on w/o any issue. The appearance will not change much as the outer face will only be ~10mm further out, the inner will be ~17mm further in.

The only 265/45x16 tires that I know of are the Kumo V700 & V710 competition tires, from this I infer that the performance attributes of the wheels are what appeal to you rather than the appearance. In this regard the extra 1" width of the 9 is a very worth while upgrade.

You may wish to upgrade the front as well w/ some +23.3mm o/s 944 8s.

Hey Bill - he has the Turbo look - can't he move the regular 911 8's up front without issues? might save him the hassel of trying to find the 951 8's... Good luck on finding a larger tire than 245/45/16 that is not more competition in nature.

Jeremy,
I was thinking of moving the 8"s to the front! The rear has 225x50s and they look woefully small, at least from the side view. The car just doesn't sit right. Lower and wider will be an improvement.
Thanks to those who replied.

I have 225's on my front - and just have a regular carrera - I think Paulm491 moved his 8's up front - you might try a search - but don't think he had any issues.

FWIW, I ran 225's on the front with 7's on my SC, then upgraded to the 944 offset 8's, that Bill V. referenced. They can require additional camber to clear the fender lip. I had to roll my fender lips, and I know others who have simply cut off the fender lip to accomodate the wheels. As mentioned, the 9's fit just fine in the back, with 245's a great fit.

Yes, I know what an M491 is, but the issue is still going to be wheel o/s. The older turbos used a separate removeable wheel spacer, so yes on those cars, If by chance there is a removeable 12.7mm spacer than a +10.6mm o/s 911 8 can be moved to the front when the spacer is removed. But starting in '80 the spacer became integral w/ the rotor/hub, as a result the only Fuchs that can be used there is the +23.3mm 7 or 8 x16.
