basic suspension upgrade
I am intrerested in upgrading my stock 89' 911 Carreras' suspension.
I realize there are a number of options. Most of those are dependent on application.
These upgrades would be for road use (no track).
The area in which I live(Ventura County) has a great series of canyon driving. fast turns wide and tight corners.
What components would you guys apply withouit breaking the bank.
thanks
New ball joints.
turbo tie rods.
bilstein sport shocks
if tracking the car add
stiffer torsion bars front and rear
revalve bilsteins to match new torsion bars
smart racing anti roll bars
triangulated strut brace
Reinforce rear sway bar mounts
Well,.....I surely would NOT install any monoballs on a street car. That's for track and dedicated race cars, IMHO. Everyone's tolerance level of noise and vibrations are different, though.
For a really good handling street Carrera, I would:
1) 22mm/29mm Sander Engineering tubular torsion bars
2) Bilstein HD front and Sport rear shocks
3) Smart Racing 20mm adjustable swaybars
4) Turbo tie rods
5) Front strut brace
Bushings and other items replaced on condition.
These components make a huge difference on a car like yours. Its assumed that these items will be installed properly and the car will get corner-balanced and aligned correctly.
How would you change your recommendation for an 85 911 thats primarily
a track car and the driver has a high tolerance for noise and vibration?
23/31 sander bars? 22/30?
What size Smart ARBs?
Thanks.
To me "Condition" means that the rubber is either hard or stretched -- you can just generally replace all the rubber bushings every 20 years -- maybe sooner if high ozone ....
Don't forget to replace the brake hoses!
Enjoy -- I was just in Vent. Co over the holidays.
Yessir,....my recommendations above were primarily for a street car,....

Assuming the use of DOT race tires,....for maximum handling and control, I would use:
1) 22mm/31mm Sander tubular torsion bars
2) Bilstein Sport front and Sport rear shocks. Bilstein RSR custom valved struts & shocks are a big improvement and JRZ single adjustable shocks would be even better. Plus, you'll get raised spindles and shorter rear shocks. You can read about the benefits on the "let's Talk" pages of our website.
3) 23mm Smart Racing's swaybars
4) Elephant Racing Polybronze bushings front & rear.
Randy's suggestion about brake hoses is excellent;
track cars get DOT-rated stainless steel hoses but street cars get rubber ones.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

If you are changing bushings, this would be THE time to install larger T-bars.
I would recommend the replacement of those Weltmeister swaybars with something much better,....the Smart Racing ones comes to mind.
Thats my plan. Put in the elephant bushings all around, the sander torsion bars like you suggested, and replace the cheap weltmeisters with the smart racing anti roll bars. While its apart put in new ball joints, get the shocks revalved to match the new torsion bars, and put in the elephant monoballs. Finish it off with a corner balance and alignment and be back on the track by May! I just need the weather to warm up
a bit back here to get started.
