Default Starter questions

Can they be changed without removing anything else?

Anyone try the high torque starter from Pelican??

I kinda like the idea of it being roughly half the weight of the original???

It can come out. But you have to kind of bear hug the transmission to get one bolt. If i remember one is a barrel nut.

I have the high torque starter and it works very well. I guess you need some long skinny arms to get your arm around the top of the transmission to undo the top bolt like iceman said, but the other thing is that it's likely to interfere* with your heater duct (heat exchanger to diverter valve section). When I installed mine it pressed against that duct so much that the old fabric ended up tearing and I had to replace it.

*Just the high torque, the OEM fits fine.

On my G50 transmission I pretty much had to do a partial engine drop. Not really a big deal. I have a hi-torque starter as well. It works fine, just sounds different. You probably will need extra washers for the barrel nuts due to the different flange thickness of the starters. (This phrase will make sense once you put the two starters side by side and look at the barrel nut.) The hi-torque can also be set up a number of ways but only one way can really fit. Again, you'll see what I mean when you have it in your hand.

I wouldn't recommend swapping starters just for the sake of weight savings.

The only weight savings is the time waiting around for the tow truck coz it didn't start.

My starter seems to be getting bad. It "clunks" and fails to turn the engine over........probably 3 times out of every 10 attempts. Yesterday I had to turn the key on and off 5 times before it fired.

I probably should pull it out and clean the connections/solenoid or even replace the solenoid(if that is possible and they can be bought)......because when it does engage it starts good.
