Default Engine Analyzer for an SC

Can I use a Sun Engine Analyzer "Sleuth One" on my 1980 SC to check the ignition system. I connected the leads as described in the Sun manual and the analyzer flashes "COIL" . The manual states that is means the leads have to be connected in a different way and to refer to the Car Maker for the correct connection. Can anyone help me with this.

Thanks in advance for your help

Bud

Never connect a dwell meter onto a SC engine. Check the warning diagram on the coil. The ignition system is completely different to normal ignitions.
You can use a inductive tacho or timing light safely though.

Correct, GMS.
There is a high voltage (from the CDI) at the coil primary terminals. Would likely cause the Sun machine to blow smoke.

The SC, at least my 78, uses an inductive pickup within the distributor instead of mechanical breaker points. The pickup is used to trigger an SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) within the CD (Capacitive Discharge) ignition module.

Most more modern test systems can be set to analyze these systems.

Most modern testers still should not be connected to the SC. The testers CAN show plug KV etc. Plug KV readings usually show up any faults and with the general reliabilty of the system connecting to a tester isn't needed. Distributor pick-up output can be mearsured without a dwell meter.
