Looked at an '86 911 today. Naturally , I would need a PPI. But let's asume the PPI comes out clean. Car is in excellent condition, and I'm picky. 68,000 miles. Two owners. One golf ball type dent on rear bumper is the only problem visible to the eye. Black on Black. Paint 9.5...interior 9.5.
How much would you offer?

If I was selling it I'd be asking $22K assuming it's a Coupe and has original paint. If I was buying it I would be thrilled to pay $18K. The '86 is a great car and it sounds like you found a nice one.

If it's truly exceptional, I don't think you'll get it for $18K unless you're lucky, though it might be a good first offer. Exceptional cars still warrant a premium -- $23-$25K may be a fair final price if it's that good.

I paid $18K for my coupe in August '01.
83K, interior 9.5, exterior 8-9 ( few scratches, stone chips etc). Clutch and alternator recently done.
Cluches seem to last less than 80K on these cars and I've heard that alternator failure is common, so I'd look for records of replacement.( together thats about $2k)
I love the car and I love the black but I hope the roads are cleaner down there as you know it shows everything.

Thanks to all. I'll make him an offer today of $16,000 contingent on PPI. I expect a counter offer.
Thanks to everyone for your input.
gerry100: Roads aren't much better down here. In fact they are best when it's really cold like it has been the last week. Everything stays frozen.
Also found your comments regarding the clutch interesting. When I got in the car the owner volunteered that it's syncros were "fair". I asked him why he said that. He said he didn't know much about them...but that someone who had looked at it had said so, they had said that every once in a while it is hard to get into gear. I've driven quite a few with this transmission. The most recent was Saturday. It was the best I've driven. Didn't have any trouble with any gear.
It didn't shift like my 951...but these cars are very different, as you know. I love them. Crossing my fingers on this one.
Is it tough around town without the power steering, and with that clutch. I'm used to a Boxster(which goes back after four year lease) and a 951. Not exactly difficult drives about town.

Seems to me like $18,000 would be about right. I paid a little more than that for an '86 red on tan that is similarly described, but had 50k miles. Maybe an 8.5 or 9 interior.
