Unhappy Help! Where can I get an exchange turbo engine??

OK. I purchased my second 911. A 1987 Carerra Turbo through an internet dealer. 45,000 miles. A 9 out of 10. Well, as you would expect, it is not a 9 out of 10. It leaks oil and after driving, oil fumes drift out of the aftercooler. I realize I probably got taken, but none the less, I will endevor to solve my problems. As far as Car Fax can tell the milage is true. So, I'm thinking I might be able to get a top overhaul as the bottom should be OK at this milage. However, if I could find one, I would like to swap a new overhauled (exchange) for my old motor.
Does anyone know where I might find someone willing to do this? Are there any shops that might be able to help?
I called Motormeister, but they will not overhaul a turbo engine. Says the are too much trouble and have too many probelms and that no one will guarantee their work. I am pretty skeptical of them anyway as I have read various posts that do not speak too highly of them.
Paul Weir is out of business.
I don't have a Porsche dealer within 500 miles of me.
The closest competant foreign car mechanic is 150 miles and he will not OH a Porsche engine.
After my somewhat bad experience on the purchase, I sure don't want to have another.
Help!!!!!!

I don't know of such exchanges for a 3.3 turbo motor, but you might want to consider shipping it out to ANDIAL in So.Cal. or to Jerry Woods in Nor.Cal.

I don't know what's so complicated about a turbo engine that the folks you have spoken with won't guarentee their work. At 45k (assuming no other major work has been done) it would be shortsighted to just have the top end rebuilt. Since these cars are oil/air cooled, the heads (especially turbos) do tend to need attention after 30k. Once you start tearing it apart, I would guess that you will find more that needs attention. It is almost always like this with Turbos. You will probably want to remove the engine and do a complete overhaul since you are most of the way there with the heads, and you are having difficulty finding anyone close who you can work with. Its no fun to get excited about a new car then to have to constantly go through the agony of not being able to drive it because it is in the shop. My recommendation is to find someone who can do a complete overhaul and then you'll be good to go. Turbos can be very reliable, but do need maintenance and attention. Porsche PHD at www.imaginauto.com, and Steve Warner of RennSport here on the list offer these services.

PS. My friend just bought an 87 slantnose sight unseen from a dealer in Florida with 44k on the clock. It is now in the shop being rebuilt because it has a broken head stud and in general is "tired". You aren't the only one.

If you have decided to replace the engine...I have a sneaky idea for you, and maybe cheaper in the long run. Replace the 911 Turbo engine with a low mileage 993 Varioram engine and associated electronics. You get a 3.6 motor with plenty of grunt, enough to propel a stock 993 to 170 mph in street trim, 282 HP and no Turbo lag. Steve Weiner will do the project for you...it is just a hop, skip and a jump over to Portland from Montana!

If you want to overhaul the motor, I am certain that Steve Weiner in Portland, or ANDIAL in Santa Ana, CA will do an excellent job for you. Both shops do this sort of thing all the time. The quality and reputation of these shops impeccable. I don't know if Mike Schatz at Schatz Motorsports does this sort of thing, but he is in the same league as ANDIAL and Steve Weiner. If ANDIAL does the job, see if you can get Kevin Kelly assigned to the job. He is a super tech! Good luck with the project.

You need a second and educated opinion before you start tearing that critter apart. If your mileage is actually 45k, no way would I exchange until you figure out what it needs.

Then you must decide if this car is a passing fancy, or part of the family.

There are a couple shops around that could help you with a leak down to determine a plan of action.

What exactly is the problem with Motor Meister?
I was planning to send my 2.4L to them and they said they could up the horsepower to around 200 and rebuild the carburators. One of the guys said that the 1973 911T motor probly wouldn't be run out, 30,000 km, that it didn't have all the problems from smog regulations, and that the Zenith carbs, according to him, were good and worth rebuilding. To be intirely truthful I have a vague understanding of what he was talking about, but he seemed to understand what I needed and wanted. I wasn't sure if I should upgrade my engine or swap out for a new one. I am still not sure. I talked to a real helpful guy who I was trying to buy some suspension parts from, he actually convinced me not to, and he said that the upgrade wouldn't be what I want for street use. He also siad I might just wanna swap a 3.0 with Webers in. What do you guys think? Who's right?
Thanks,
Bill
