I own a 1979 Euro SC coupe red/black. My engine has suffered major damage. On a short trip one night my accelerator stuck at a very high rev causing both rocker arms to break. Damages include head, pistons, piston holders, so on, and etc. My mechanic recommends buying a used engine. His quote for a top and bottom rebuild is over $6000. The best price on a used with a 90 day warranty is $4500. This vehicle has a new clutch, rebuilt trans., rebuilt fuel injection, new fuel lines, new starter, and recently tuned. Is this the point to throw in the towel on this project? Are there any other mechanics in the Atlanta area that can help? Are there any offers to take over this project? Give me some feedback from the Porsche field. What would you do?

Even if you have had it with the car, selling it with a blown up engine will be difficult at best.
sorry man...THAT SUCKS! What do you think the car is worth? $13,000-$14,000?
I'm still just a Porsche dreamer. Thats my humble opinion

For about $3,000 in labor, you can install a 964 or 993 engine, + the cost of the engine $8,000?). I am certain there are East Coast shops that would tackle this job for you. You'll have from 250 to 282 HP, depending on what motor you obtain.
You could sell off the slightly broken SC engine to help finance the project. Or, cheaper yet, install a 3.2 Carrera motor and associated electronics. A good running 3.2 motor with a chip and a good exhaust is probably good for at least 220HP. There are lots of 3.2 motors out there...the 3.0 motors are bound to be a little "long in the tooth" by now seeing that the ceased production in 1983, 20 years ago.

Hang on, keep checking around for decent replacement motors. Thre are decent 3.0's around for that price or less - If you're stressing, then maybe walk away from it for a day or so to recoup.

Pelican classifieds seems to have one popping up every other week or so - I'd post on that website that you need one, and see what bites.
If you have or have access to a garage and decent tools, get yourself a Bentley manual and 101 Projects book, and all available buddies / pals and be done with your problem in several hours. Stressful, but if $$ is tight then it's the way to go.
Agreed, it would be extremely tough to sell now with a grenaded motor - at least at a fair price.
Hope it all works out..

Just went through this my self. I decided to rebuild because I track the car and I did not want to worry about the engine. The piece of mind was worth the extra couple of thousand.
Don't forget the core value of your engine in your calculations. You may be able to get between 1500 and 2000 for your broken engine.
I'm in Atlanta too, send me an email and I'll hook you up with a couple of different mechanics to talk to.

It seems that to do a proper rebuild on any of these engines(2.7-3.6) the cost will be about the same,~$8-10k. If you are happy w/ the car as is, rebuild, for a little more performance get some 98mm p/c for a s/s 3.2. A somewhat cheaper alternative is to pick up an engine either 3 or 3.2 from someone that is doing a performance swap, these are often in exc. cond. the owner just wants more performance. I agree that Pelican is quite active in this regard. Here is a recently posted 3.2 which is in nice shape, the owner is t/ping a 3.6
For a lot more performance there's always a stock 3.6 which is only a little harder to t/p than a 3.2 motronic. For max n/a performance breath on the 3.6 a little w/ cams, chip & exhaust, this will give you close to 300 hp
None of the t/p are particularly hard to do

Red Euro:
Buying a used motor (unless you know the person and or car it's coming from seems like a bit of a gamble. Another customer where I take my car bought a motor for his SC from a dismantler. The mechanic installed it and after a few hundred miles it started leaking from several places.
Personally, I think the peace of mind that would come from having your motor rebuilt by a mechanic you trust would be worth the extra $$$.

Thanks for the feedback! It's good to know that others have had similar experiences. With your help, I have discovered new options. Throwing in the towel is not an option. "Bob" It was explained that faulty wiring was trapped in the accelerator linkage. I welcome any other advise from those that have rebuilt or upgraded.
Thanks...
Thanks...

Try Carolina Speedwerks in Thomasville NC if you decide to rebuild. Daves prices are fair and the work is first quality. I can post the number if you need it after I get to the shop tomorrow
