Default Tires and choices: good now, but who knows...

...for how much longer?!!!

With my 7 and 9x16s, I need 225 and 245s. For years I had run R-comps, but of late moving the Trackmeister to 95% street, I just mounted a set of Bridge RE11s. As if the scant options of tires in these sizes isn't deplorable enough, I'm now told Bridge will be phasing out this tire. Nice.

I'm driving a dinosaur ...love it, to be sure. But I feel like I just got a governor's reprieve for another couple of years before I have to succumb to whatever will be available for us with this 16" combo. It is mixed joy that I have these now ...I don't want to think about later
Happy Sunday, all!

9x16 just isn't practical anymore. Since stock rear size for SC/Carrera is 225/50/16, that's the only size I think you're going to be able to find readily going forward. Time to ditch the 9's and get 8's instead, and go back to stock tire sizes.

I'm thinking of going Pirelli P ZERO ROSSO. This will be next season. I'm out in the rain a lot, if next summer is as crap as this one!

Bridge RE 71 R is why the RE 11 is going away.
RE 71 R is a great tire but it is directional.

I just purchased a set of Michelin period correct tires for my turbo-look, kind of pricy compared to RE11's but they ride great. The company is called Cooper Tire, they sell hard to find tires for classic and older cars.

Yes these are current tires, Coker Tire has a license to sell Michelin tires, they are produced at a Michelin facility. Also I received a $70 rebate directly from Michelin. Only have about 200 miles but I like these tires over the RE11s. I have another set of turbo wheels mounted with RE11s, many Porsche owners say the RE11s are the best of whats out there in the 245/45/16 street tires and they are really good tires. Dont know about the new Pirelli 245/45/16s.

So the differences are not huge, to me the Michelins look a little better maybe lower profile and maybe grip better. I attached a picture of both sets, the RE11s are mounted on the black centers and Michelins white centers.

Be glad you have a choice! This is a hot topic over on the bird.

When you're very concerned about widths and sizes (205/225 vs. 225/245, etc.) you should really look at the actual dimensions. 205, 225, 245, etc. is merely a nominal dimension and the actual dimension is not the same across tire models, let alone different brands. Kind of like shoes.

In other words, Brand X's 205 and 225 can actually be respectively wider than Brand Y's 225 and 245. There are currently several instances of this. TireRack is pretty good about listing comprehensive dimensions on all the tires they offer, other big sites are usually similar.

If you car handled best with the 225/245 combo, I would recommend broadening your search to a 205/225 combo. (You'll need to adjust sidewall accordingly, 205/55 and 225/50.) Measure your tread and overall section width, chances are current offerings of 205/225 are pretty close (tires tend to grow in width as time goes by). Anyway, a 205/225 should more or less maintain the same front-to-rear contact patch ratio.

Be glad you don't have 70's Ferrari metric wheels. IIRC, Pirelli just spent a lot to develop a tire for them. Or XJ220 wheels, 959 wheels, CTR wheels, or any wheels with a special non-J bead. If you have a 959, you have one choice of tire.

The aforementioned Michelins are a good choice, although only in two sizes. They also have the most "period looking" tread pattern. Coker has exclusive rights to sell the SX MXX3 in North America.

Since you are in North America, touching on what proporsche says: often Europe has a different or better tire selection. Finding an NA distributor can be hard, leaving (expensive) shipping to end consumer.

There are a few options in 245/45 and 225/50 if you'd like to maintain that. Toyo comes to mind. However, there are a few tires in 205 and 225 that are respectively wider.

I just got 205 and 245 RE11s, but my local Porsche dealership recommended Pirelli Rosso's (a Porsche certified tire). Here's Porsche's recommended tires page: https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessor.../tyreapproval/

Thanks for the feedback and advice, all! Yeah, I know it's the price we pay for the old cars we love to keep! About the metric sizes ...you made me recall the crap a buddy of mine long ago had to deal with when he had a Mustang --yeah, a Mustang!-- with those metric rims ...what on earth was Ford thinking?!!!

I've got the period-correct BBS in 7 and 9x16, so don't really want to go to 8 in the rear. So who knows, maybe there will still be a good tire out there in 225/245 a few years from now. Is the RE71 an R-comp? If so, that's the whole bag I'm trying to avoid now that the my "Trackmeister" has shifted to 95% street.

OTOH, I know 205 works fine on 7s, but isn't 225 a bit narrow for 9s? (with appropriate adjustment in aspect ratio, of course)?

I wonder if you would buy tires in Europe what is the cost of shipping it to Us of A?Because the tires i just got for my 9th and 8th up front costed me around 600 euros for all 4, so if i see price of Michelin for $350 x 4=$1400 ...there is a room for shipping cost isn`t it?
I got 205/55 ZR 16 Continental ContiSportContact...and 9Jx16 15 RA 245/45 ZR 16 Continental ContiSportContact N2
