Red face Shift shaft seal replacement on my 82 911 sc

I am having great difficulty removing the shift shaft replacement seal on my 82 911 sc. I have tried various tools including cotter pin remover. I have successfully removed the metal spring retainer on the inside of the seal, but cannot get the seal itself out. Any suggestions?

I have used a thin, arc or angled pick inserted between the shaft and the seal, then rotating the pick so that it grabs the seal, which can then be pulled out. I have found that the seal usually comes out pretty easily given that it is old and leaky.
