Default This is a hard one????

O-boy is this a hard choice.......

I have always been a firm believer that a 911 should be air-cooled and that the classic style/shape is the 80's body.

Hence, me owning a 1985 turbo look coupe........ I love my car BUT!!!! I have always loved the sleek lines of the 993 and I love the idea of a 6 speed.

I am torn right now as to what to do...... a day or two back I put my 85 up for sale as I found a really nice black 96 for sale just down the road from my house.

Now that I have had a few people asking questions about my car, I am starting to think twice???

My car is just so perfect and I don't think I could find another example like it........ but I do want the 993.

Votes people...... what would you do???

Arrrghhhh wish I could have both

Sell the kids into slavery and have both!!

I guess it's a tough question. Apart from the fact that I can't afford 993, I also believe that the true 911 is oil/air cooled. And the mid eighties shape was/is the archetypal Porsche. Perhaps thats simply because it was the current shape when I was just a spotty kid with posters of 911's and Pink Floyd on my bedroom walls? (OK, so I was late getting into Floyd).

Noone can answer this dylemma for you.

FWIW, I'll put money on you staying where you are. (But not much)

Keep the 85 and save for the 993. Just remember it is always harder to find an older car in good shape then it is to fine a newer car is good shape.

If you can only have one car I would get the 993 it is overall a much better car then the carrera. BTW 96 is the way to go. Here is a pic of mine.

I saw your '85 911 on the web. Very nice. I would find it hard to part with a car as nice as that one appears to be. My guess is that you'll miss it, even though the 993 may be the best production coupe Porsche has ever made. You probably already know that the driving experience is entirely different. If you decide to go ahead, take your time on buying a 993 and check is out very carefully. Good luck,

I see you have both models...... I want that!!!! LOL

I know this is so hard..... I really will kick my self once I sell her, I know I will.

But my number one choice of car would be a 1996/7 GT2.
This is why I am really thinking about this black 993..... I would make it look like the GT2.

Hi Paul, that is a hard call to make. It took me 20 years to finally find the "one" I had chances to acquire others before and since, but I know that I would not be satisfied with anything other than what I have. Only you can decide which way to go. I wish you the best, I'm glad I don't have to do it.

Do you enjoy the vast market of upgrades available for your 85 Carrera? The fact that it is the original 911 style? And you are part of a community that actually knows the "firing order" of a 3.2 liter engine?

In comparision 993's are limited on the upgrades and most of the owners (myself included) don't know how to work on these cars and are at the mercy of the local p-car mechanic. And while the 993 made some great enhancements over the 911 (pre-90) cars, it does not have the same soul of an 80's 911.

If I was in your shoes I would not sell my "so perfect" 85 Turbo Look Coupe . . . because you will regret it. Save your money and have both. Prices on 993's have been heading south for quite a while now and better deals will be made in the future.

I own a 993 and lust for an 87-89 Carrera. But I won't sell my 993 to have one because I know I would regret it.

Best of luck,

Tom

If anyone is interested....... take a look at the car. Then you will know why it is such a hard choice.
http://hometown.aol.com/porsche911co...age/photo.html

Also the car is very rare in many ways:

Fully loaded
Euro
Tricked out suspension
Big HP engine
Factory racing parts
all history
Etc, etc

The list goes on........ Its nice to know 100% about your car.

If I buy a 993 I would not probably have the luxury of knowing all the previous owners personally and having all paper work form day one!!!

But you know what you just get the itch for something and you just gotta have it...... I have that itch.

Damm me seeing that 933 LOL

I just bought a 1985 turbo-look because I thought that it was a classic Porsche and probably the most undervalued of the rarer models. Strictly from an 'investment' point of view, the turbo-looks are moving up in value and the 993s are still coming down, I think. I also love the 993 but it would be tough to let go of the turbo-look. Both would be the ticket, otherwise it would have to be one special 993.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your car is a standard body 911 Carrera not a turbo look.

Ive owned 911's, 911 turbo's, 964's, 993's, I have owned 964 Speedsters, RS America's you name it. I love the feel of the older cars but then again the 993 is a really sweet ride. I had a 993 C2S the king of the hill in non turbo air cooled 911's in my opinion. I moved back down the scale as the family home ( not my choice ) got upgraded and my colleciton got down graded. Of all the cars I had I think the RS America and the Speedster were the best looking and maybe my favorite. The 993 C2S was the best driver. The targa will be back soon with the Duck and the polished petals on the Fuchs. Its will rival the other for looks. There is just something classic looking about the pre 964 cars. So my vote goes for ummmm .... all of them? Hope that helps you.
