Post Why is it so hard to sell 1st Porsche?

My 80sc targa is bleeding oil all over my garage and my mechanic estimates $3000 in repairs. I've been researching putting some money into upgrades since major surgery is needed anyway. I'm very afraid that once I start the project it will become 2 or 3 times what it originally started as ($$)--therefore am considering selling it but it is soooooo hard to let go. Anyone else care to comment on how they got over first p-car separation anxiety?

When I bought my SC, I said I'd never sell it. Nonetheless, I was selling it a few months ago and "upgrading" to a 993. In general terms, I performed a complete strip and paint, new interior, and suspension.

I found a 993, got the loan check, and even a buyer for the SC. But couldn't sell it.

I still drive the SC and find it suits my purpose better than a 993. The comes a point of no return. For me, I purchased a clean SC that had never been in an accident and no rust. It's a car in great shape and I really gain nothing by selling and buying another one.

it's because getting a 911 was one of your life's goals (no knock - was one of mine too).

I'm up against the same problem. I am looking at a 993 but have little intension on releasing the 911 that I have now. The problem is that my better half doesn't think 2 Porsches are necessary (what does she know?). She will also resist giving up her side of the garage (the nerve). For now, I will keep the 89 911 but I am currently trying to find a creative way to bring a 1997 993 Cab into the family. I must have both!!! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Find out exactly whats leaking, is it the cly's, broken studs, valve cover gaskets, flywheel seal, hoses or what? If your mechanic gave you an est. he must have an idea. If you like the car and the rest of it is in good shape then $3000.00 isn't really that bad. If you sell it like this you will probaly take a beating, then someone else will spend the money and come out with a good deal. You should never sell a Porsche just because it may need something, unless its a basket case or you really need the cash.

Then there is myself, who inherited my Father's 356A, and my wife goes and buys me the 928. And she knew that if I _could_ make a spot in the garage, both would be in there. The 356A is, the 928 isn't....Yet.
Do you really need to let it go? I have always liked the Targa's.

I'm now wrestling with this very issue. I've only had mine since last July, and am now contemplating selling my house to "upgrade" to a 993. My current P-car will probably always have projects to be done, and I enjoy doing them myself. But a black or polar silver 993 that needs nothing is really the only car on the road that fills me with envy. The only superstition I have in life is that pertaining to cars. I think my BMW has sensed that my loyalty has switched to my Porsche. And I'm afraid of starring at a 993 too long when I'm with my Carrera. I feel like I've cheated on my girlfriend when I drool over 993's. What accident will befall me if I really get serious about selling the Carrera for a 993? I fear a head stud may suddenly break, or a missed shift may mysteriously take place during spirited driving. Oh, the humanity!

I owned a silver 71 coupe for 18yrs but rust won and I sold the car.I replaced it with a 76 Euro but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for my 71.I guess it's like the first love in your life that always stays with you even when it's over.

Unfortunately, if you don't sell the first one, it is equally as hard to sell the second. And the third, etc. It's truly a disease!

John is right. Here's my story:

After owning and loving my '87 Carrera for several years, I began to lust after a 993, which I have long thought is the ultimate Porsche. I finally bought one, a '97 Carrera S. OK, time to sell the '87. Couldn't do it! So now I have two 911's in the garage, and my girlfriend starts to get concerned.

Then I discovered the track. After a summer of DE events with the '87 (and occasionally with the '97), I decided I need a dedicated track car. So I began planning to modify the '87 Carrera. Couldn't do it. It's too nice and too original. So, I bought a friend's '87 Carrera that had already been "trackified". Girlfriend now VERY concerned.

OK. Time to finally sell the first '87 Carrera. Still can't do it. So now there are THREE 911's in the stable. When will the madness end? They're all wonderful cars in their own way.

Fortunately, a friend has rescued me from the madness; he wants very much to buy my first 911, and I'm going to do it. At least it'll be nearby and I can have visitation if I need it. Who knows, maybe I'll buy it back from him someday.

Hopefully, someone can learn from my example, but I'm not sure what exactly they might learn.

And then there's @#*&@* Jerry Seinfeld. When I first heard about his burgeoning collection, sometime early last year, I thought how ridiculous. Then in May I got my 911. Everything was fine for a couple months, I was faithful. But now I find that I want an '86-'89 930 BADLY. And then I'd love for my wife to have a cherry 356. And then I'm always looking in the ads at the '84-'89 911s. And if I were able to get any of these cars, there's no way I'd get rid of the one I have. It just doesn't stop.

Seinfeld Disorder.

Cheers,

THANK YOU ALL !!!!
I have have my beautiful 87'cab for about a year and have recently mentioned my "next porsche". That is when the guilt started. I also lust for a 97 c2s or a 96-97 TT, but felt badly when even thinking about getting rid of the 87. So my thoughts shifted to the same how to fit two in the garage mentality &lt;--its never gonna happen, especially with zero wife cars in the garage. So my answer will have to be give in and get a new house, but only one with a minimum three car garage for the expected blessed events in the future-no not more kids...cars!!

Anyone care for a second hand "time to sell the Porsche" story?

I have a good friend who lives in Aspen - and lives to ski - (we call him an "attorney at play"). Not a rich kid at all - he worked his way thru law school driving a NYC cab - just someone who really never gets his priorities confused - he left NYC w/o a dime to live in Aspen, and made it work - (& he quit the Aspen zoning and planning commission because the meetings were interfering w/ his skiing - think that position might be of some value to an att'y?).
OK, so sometime in the '70's, when he was just starting, he buys a 911 - loved the car , of course, but ultimately it just wasn't fitting in w/ the big picture goals (buying property in Aspen, among others)and he decides it's time to sell. He negotiated a price w/ a dealer in Denver and set a date when he could get a lift back to town. - no problem and really no regrets -done deal, he had fun w/ the car, and now taking another step on his way to living forever in Aspen.

Comes the day - nice summer weekday, and off he goes - East! - over Independence Pass. thru Leadville, down towards Vail, and then, because this was , I believe, before the Eisenhower Tunnel was finished (or maybe just for the fun of it), back over Loveland Pass and then back down to I-70, and finally into Denver...
Anybody ever take this trip? it's about 3 maybe 3 1/2 hours on spectacular mountain roads - think about it for a minute...

So, did he sell the car?

Well, yeah he did (he still lives in Aspen, doesn't he?), but he told me he sat in that car for 3 hours outside the dealer before he could bring himself to do the deed...and though I always understood this story, I now really appreciate it..

I'm a man of commitments...wifes, dogs, cars, etc. Unfortunately, its usually the car that gets betrayed when a "nicer" one flashes by...When I bought my SC last year I made the same "commitment" that I made 30 or so times before...maybe as age catches up with me it'll be easier to keep this one, maybe not...but I'm still infactuated with this beauty...for now.
