Any tried to fit an 86 or later dash onto an earlier 3.2? I am refreshing my interior, and good '84-85 dashes are virtually non-existent these days.
I can get a later model dash, but I'm concerned about the defrost vents. My '84 has only two small defrost outlets on either side, with bolts in the center. The later dashes have a large, uninterrupted defrost vent.
Wondering if this is a workable retrofit. Would appreciate any insight or experience.
Went ahead and bought a dash from an 86. Definitely going to have to fabricate some solution to the larger defrost vent opening. Will update when I get to that point.
3D print an adapter - give the plan file away or make a few & sell
That's a clever idea. I'll look into that.
"Larger," as in the '84 dash has two small vents at the perimeters of the dash, and the later year dashes have a vent all the way across the front of the dash.
to run the newer dash, you will have to cut a larger hole for the center vent. The defrost vent cover fits just fine, but because of the location, it does not line up perfectly with the existing hole for the defrost vents, but works fine. I don't think its worth cutting the original vent out and welding the new style one in. I love the updated look.
So, I sourced a really nice '86 dash that needs to be dyed, but is otherwise perfect. The defrost vent solution is a simple "full dash" vent from a 993. Also sourced from DC. Larger AC vents are going in too. Will post pics when I finish, but also having my gauges re-done, so it will take a bit.
