Default 2002 911 Engine Rebuild

I ran acr a 2001 911 that had an IMS failure. I have always wanted a 911 and if it isn't too expensive to rebuild the engine I might go for it. I have rebuilt GM and Chrysler motors and even helped build a VW motor I ce. This would be the first time for a Porsche Engine.

I see that reman engines are pushing $20k. Are the parts really that expensive or is the build that complicated, or are the reman builders just taking advantage of the Porsche name?

I hope that I can make this work. I really would like to have a Porsche before I get to old to drive one.

I think you are looking for the 996 forum. Porsche is a funny animal. Everyone thinks they've got a 911 but Porsche stopped making the 911 in 1989.

I think the risk you are taking is that the engine can't be rebuilt. It depends on how much collateral damage was done when the bearing failed, and how much debris is scattered throughout. Might need an experienced hand involved to know for sure.

But yeah, the guys on the 996 board will know. This forum is just for the air-cooled cars through 1989.

Your other option would be a used motor. That may not be as risky as it sounds. Again, ask the 996 crew.

Thank you, I was unaware of that. The said 911 and I took it at face value. My mistake.

I had scored cylinders on my 02 911 and rebuilt myself. Cost was ~18k CND.

Bolts alone you're looking at $2-3K. Not joking. Wife wasn't impressed when I walked in with a $2500 bag of bolts. lol

I remember when I was shopping for my car 11 years ago and dealers kept telling me they don't call them 911's ever since 9/11. I get their reasoning, but this isn't why.

To answer the OPs original questions, yes, yes, and yes. Having rebuilt older GM, Chrysler, and VW motors are no training for rebuilding a modern-era Porsche engine that had an IMS failure. And, as noted above, it is prohibitively expensive.
