Got a speeding ticket for Christmas
I'm bummed. Was on a casual drive on the back roads in southern DE. Came up on a long straight stretch of road, open fields on both sides, no cars in sight, doing the posted speed limit of 50mph, so I give it a little gas just for the thrill. I see a car coming the other way, so I quickly slow down....CRAP...it's state cop. Turns on his lights, makes a u-turn and pulls me over. Says he clocked me doing 75mph and adds that I was doing 55 but I shot up to 75 pretty quickly. :-). Frankly, I didn't realize they could take radar readings from that far away. Anyway, he ticketed me for doing 55 in a 50, but the ticket states actual speed as 75. If I pay the $95 within 30 days, I get zero points, but from what I understand it still goes on my record. What I don't know is if my insurance company will pick up a zero point violation and if it will affect my insurance rate.
My record is pretty clean, had one 5mph over violation about 7 years ago, probably nothing for 20 years prior to that. There's an option in DE to plead Probation Before Judgement which would vacate the violation entirely, but I think I'd need to hire an attorney for that. Is it worth it?
I'm new at this and thought some of you might have more experience with this stuff. :-(
Merry Christmas!

Give your insurance company a call and ask them. They'll know best. You might wind up spending more in lawyer fees than any minor bump in insurance. So imo, just pay the ticket and move on. You got caught. It's part of the game and it happens.

Fwiw, you should've also asked the cop what your 50-75 mph time was. Ya know...as a baseline for acceleration research purposes

Zero points means that the ticket doesn't get reported to your insurance, so you're good to go.
Its been a hot minute since I've been pulled over, but the last time I did, I was going 104 in a 50 zone. I was honest with the Trooper who stated that I should appear at the court date to discuss this with him. All I initially asked for was a ticket that wouldn't warrant any points... lets just say the judge looked at me cross-eyed, but went along with the Troopers knockdown to my infraction. He followed up with "I never want to see you in my court again!", and slapped me with an aggressive driving course requirement (3 hours, 100$). I considered this my get out of jail free card.

Not sure of the differences between states, but in DPRI (The Democratic Peoples Republic of Illinois) you can go to court sans atty and ask the judge for "court supervision". Generally it's six months with no infractions and your record is cleared.
Angry old white judges, like the one referenced above, will sometimes add the classes to that. Good luck!

Sounds like what happened to me last year! After riding my motorcycle with a buddy all over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at speeds north of 90 MPH, we split up and I headed to North Dakota. Just a few miles away from the state line, in the middle of miles and miles of cornfields in Minnesota, after going 5 over the limit forever, I decided to pick up the pace. I think I went 15 over the limit. As soon as I did, a cop coming from the opposite direction got me. Luckily, he only gave me a warning, but I couldn't believe the timing!!!

What is probation before judgment?
Probation before judgment (PBJ) provides a means for a first offender to avoid having a conviction entered against him or her. PBJ works as follows:- The offender enters a plea of guilty or nolo contendere.
- The Court defers further proceedings and the entry of a judgment of conviction against the offender.
- The Court places the offender on probation for a period of time with such terms and conditions as the Court decides are appropriate.
- If the offender complies with the terms and conditions, at the end of the period of probation, no conviction will be entered on the record. "

Here in Alabama, unless you play football for the Crimson Tide, you can request driving school and there is no impact to your record or insurance. If you get a 2nd ticket in a year like I recently did, you can go to court and beg for driving school. I have attended the school so many times in my 61 years that I could teach it. If you play for the Tide, you are home free.

I would also highly recommend a GOOD radar detector as well!......just for peace of mind....they are not foolproof and don't protect in all circumstances, but I stress a little less when my right foot gets heavy. Of course, I kinda wend a little overboard and got a Radenso RCM which is hidden behind the front bumper, along with an AL Priority laser detector which scrambles the signal if hit by a laser.....it's overboard and expensive but I would otherwise get too anxious when having fun...(these are not legal in all states).

lol wow yeah 95$ is so cheap. almost 20 years ago i was doing 35 in a 25 and they dinged me for 300$. I'm in California so take that as you will.
That being said, as others have stated, just pay it. If your driving is as spotless as you claim, even if you do get a point it will fall off in about 3 years.

Agreed about radar detector. You would have picked him up MILES away in that scenario. He had it on the entire time, which is how he knew you sped up. Look up
Check out this guy's site. Forums. Tests. Recommendations for any price point. But any modern detector is great, especially in those circumstances.
