Porsche plans overflow production of the 718 model series in Osnabrück

06/23/2022

Porsche is relocating parts of its production from the Porsche main plant in Zuffenhausen to the Volkswagen site in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony.
From the middle of next year, overflow production of the 718 model series will start there in order to meet the high demand from all Porsche customers. The relocation will not affect the number of employees in Zuffenhausen."The multi-brand plant in Osnabrück has already been a proven partner in our Porsche production network in the past," says Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG. "Our colleagues were responsible for the overflow production of the Cayenne and the 718 Cayman. We are glad to be able to draw on these many years of experience and realise as many of our customers' sports car dreams as possible."

The main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is working at full capacity with production of 911 and 718 models. Porsche is pursuing an ambitious e-mobility strategy: by the middle of the decade, the 718 series will be fully electrified. In 2030, the share of all new vehicles with a fully electric drive should be more than 80 percent. Even then, the 718 and 911 model series will continue to be produced on the two-door line in Zuffenhausen.

Looks like production will continue for a while? ...Especially knowing Osnabruck 718 production won't go live until the mid 2023.

They won’t have to worry about keeping up with demand when all they offer is electric.

My guess is that this plan may have something to do with a desire to pump out more expensive (including several new limited edition) 911 models at Zuffenhausen

What I'm reading about this, is that they won't be stopping ICE production of the 718 anytime soon.

It sounds like they will sell the current 718 up till end of 2024 and then switch over to the EV versions start of 2025.

What I am curious about is the statement of "the 718 series will be fully electrified". Does this include the Spyder/GT4? I wonder if they will stop selling those cars by 2025 and take a small break (like the GT3) and then come out with a new ICE platform for the next gen GT4. I only consider because the GT4 shares more parts with their 911 lineup than the rest of the 718 lineup and since we haven't heard of any plans of making the 911's fully EV anytime soon, I wonder if this means we get more GT4s. However at the same time it doesn't make sense to make a platform specifically for 1 model of car so from a cost perspective it wouldn't make sense. Who knows, I sure don't haha

I don’t read anything new here.

Osnabrucke has been building Caymans for years.

Probably want to ensure they get 4RS and Spyder RS to target production. Also frees up space on Zuff line for more 992s.

Just a few weeks back PAG CEO committed to ME EV by 2025, so don’t see them coming off that target.

My previous base 2018 718 was built in Osnabrück. When we visited the Stuttgart factory in October 2019 the only 718s being built at Zuffenhausen were the Spyder and GT4 alongside the 991 GT3/Speedsters and 992. The rest were all being built in Osnabrück.

Who's to say they don't continue to offer new ICE 718s while also offering full electric beyond 2025?

Didn't they even do something similar in 2012 with the 997/991? Maybe a bad analogy but just throwing out ideas.

It’s pretty typical historically to have 1 year overlap of special models of the old platform with first year of new platform…

Porsche has done this for years, so has BMW, must be a German thing. Common sense would tell you to stop making the old model and start the new one, but they don't think like that.

I like that my window sticker says "Built in Zuffenhausen".

They must have subcontracted to Ford that week. I haven't been that unlucky. I have very tight and consistent panel gaps.
