Default Spyder Graphics - on the fence - color choices - examples?

I'm contemplating the thought of having graphics applied to my new Chalk Spyder, in a similar pattern to what was on my 981 Carrara White Spyder. I bought the 981 as a CPO car in San Diego and the graphics were already on the car when I bought it. But I liked them a lot. I thought they added some real character and made it unique and I thought they toughened up the look a bit. The 981 wasn't a GT car and it had a softer appearance than its GT4 counterpart.

Plenty of Chalk cars out there right now as that color/shade seems to have caught on lately. Even several Chalk with Aurum wheels. I want to set mine apart in the right way. The stripes on my 981 were a matte or satin black with a silver border and I thought they went very well with the Carrara White with black GT4 wheels. But I'm struggling to decide what accent color would complement my Chalk car without putting it over the top. I have Aurum wheels and the obvious option would be to try and match the gold tone. But I also don't want to make my car the Porsche equivalent to the 2003 Camry with the factory gold package. lol

Anyone here have or have seen a Chalk 718 with graphics that they thought looked good? Here's my 981:

I would like to vote ‘no’ for the decals on the Spyder; the whole purpose of the car is to be more sleek and clean. With that said, I do like the side stripe decal with ‘Porsche’. Maybe a silver or white one would look more subtle on chalk.

I think a narrow border of aurum or red around the black middle would look good.

The black will match your roof and all the plastics bits around the car.

Thin accent rim to match either wheel or interior.

But I think you can skip the middle one below the crest on the frunk.

I am just going to throw this idea out there: crowd source a graphic art designer. At a site like designcrowd.com, you can offer a few hundred bucks and you will have 100 designs in a week. Just google “crowd source graphic art”.

stripes on rear deck emphasize the length compared to the std boxster so i like it as a way to distinguish it. go for it!

Yeah, I forgot about that. That little remnant is what was left over from "Porsche San Diego" being stenciled into the gap between the main stripes. They forgot to remove that little piece prior to delivery. But great suggestions. Thanks. I'm leaning toward Aurum accents but we'll see.

Thanks. I agree about the rear stripes. They add more to the car than the front ones do, for sure. I also felt they accentuated the humps very well since the white paint kind of swallowed them up to a degree.

Do you have red brakes, black brakes, or yellow PCCB?

Do you have CF trim?

What is the interior stitching?

All these matter to create an aesthetically cohesive car. And an aesthetically cohesive car will have a better overall "presence".

My vote would be a CF weave with border to match brake color it you have CF interior trim and red or yellow brakes

If you don't have CF trim, and have the exterior color matched interior trim, then go with matte black, again, with a border to match brake calipers if they are red or yellow. If black, go with a gold border to match the Aurum wheels.

Black PCCB calipers, black interior with yellow stitching and Chalk painted interior trim. No visible CF.

I’m leaning towards black with gold trim to match the wheels. I need to see how gold/Aurum looks on top of the chalk paint first. That’s really my worry.

Shoot us a PM, we can always get together a few mockups to help you make some visuals. I would imagine you can include some Aurum as long as not too strong or overpowering design wise. I think it would overlay nicely on Chalk and create a nice effect. Perhaps a secondary color or ghosted grey could be cool?

Not sure about your age, but stripes are for kids. I feel like less is more. The car is beautiful on its own. It’s not a Dodge Challenger that has to be covered up with graphics. It is your money though…..

Mmm, I’m not sure about stripes are for kids but I certainly knew the topic would be polarizing. And that’s the way it should be. I love the diversity of opinion when it comes to these works of art.

Easy now. You trying to bring the entire automotive graphics industry to a screeching halt? Sometimes more is more.

That pick-up truck is bitchin'; I'd like to offer $5K...no, make that $10K ADM. ()

...now back to topic, I am a fan of Spyder stripes (and Porsche striping in-general). My deep thoughts:
  • Porsche is the ONLY brand where I prefer when the stipes are body-panel specific (and not carried through from tip-to-tail).
  • Part 2, I like combinations of hood-only, a hood + roof, or the three-pack hood, roof, tail.
  • If you decide to start with rear-only, plan your design so you can easily add the hood at a later date. (I think you'll want to.)
  • Big YES for designs which incorporate an outline around / into the main stripes.
  • Consider choosing a subtle-color stripe that is in the same color-family as the car's paint (Just be that few shades darker or lighter than the body color).
  • Match the metallic or non-metallic properties of your stripe to your paint. (For a Chalk car, my choice would be a non-metallic stripe.)
  • Agree with others that the color of the secondary / border stripe matching another bit of the car is sweet; or choose a lighter / darker shade of the main stripe.
  • Finally, make the secondary stripe slightly inset into the main stripe. (Check out photo below of a silver 981 Spyder with black stripe and red trimmer. (Solid artistry was done here; this ain't no 'Challenger / Mega-Mustang / Camaro Sticker Pack' job.)

Fun post; and enjoy whatever you choose.
