Default 2 days ... err 1.5 days in a GT4RS at the 'Ring

well today was the 1st of 2 days with the Porsche Sport Driving School at the Nordschleife!

We were greeted this morning with really bad fog, but luckily it was still dry at that time we got out on the track (in a group of 3 GT3's and 2 GT4RS'es)

this is the car I am driving:

we got about 8 laps in before the rain resulted in a 992 GT3 crash that closed the track, and the weather kept it closed for the rest of the day, so not enough track time to make much of an evaluation) today!

but the car is amazing, very quick and easily capable of keep up with the GT3, although its clear that the suspension and engine placement does negatively impact the cars "wet" stability, as the 2 4RS'es
experienced identical slides that the GT3's did not...

more tomorrow as we return to the track - hopefully in better weather - I might manage a full lap video!

p.s notable that while all the 4RS'es at the event were Weissach Pkg cars, none were wearing PCCB!

p.p.s SHARK BLAU for the win!!!

in fact neither were the GT3's!

So here is the one-and-only lap video my lazy *** could be bothered to capture with the Garmin - its my last lap of the day, I'm tired and I am scrappy ... enjoy!

If nothing else - listen to that engine!

Very cool, more driving impressions please!

Wonder if the decision to use iron brakes on these cars is related to the amount of track work / ease of servicing (less chance of dinging a rotor during tire change, etc.).

More likely a supply chain issue, as I believe they've been rejecting 718 builds with PCCBs recently due to a lack of parts.

unless they have changed their "strategy" this year vs previous, I strongly suspect its the supply chain issue, in previous PSDS events I have attended ALL the factory cars have had PCCB ...

forecast for tomorrow is MUCH better so I will be able to push the car more (I'm hoping to meet or beat my BtoG personal best in the 991.2 GT3 in the 4 RS...)

So today the weather was much better than yesterday and I managed to put quite a few laps in with the car against the many GT3's, GT3RS'es etc ...

My overall impressiions:

- the car is as fast in a straight line as the 992 GT3 (no surprises there then)
- the car is about as fast as a 991.2 GT3 around the Ring
- the 992's multilink suspension and RWS does give it an advantage over the 4RS
- the 4 RS might be a little too stiffly sprung for the Ring - it moves around A LOT ...more so than the ML 992 GT3
- the sound is epic - no need for an aftermarket exhaust!
- cabin is comfortably familiar to any GT4/Spyder driver
- always check the manufacture date on your tires! (dont ask)
- PDK-S is great but its still not as good as selecting your own gear (on track)
- why did my foot keep slipping off the accelerator? - this has NEVER happened before!!!
- ...

I managed to get my Garmin Catalyst to record one lap - I'll get it uploaded when I get home

Thanks for sharing the photos and comments Larry!

Looking forward to the Catalyst lap information...

Interesting comments especially those in red, surprised that the tire dates would come into play, they should be worn out in just s few days on the ring? Foot slipping, aluminum pedals? Finally the PDK, sounds like you were you letting it select the gears?

IMO, the suspension, 4 strut design, and how much it and the regular GT4 "move around" makes this car waaaaay over priced. You should NOT have to be fighting the car. All of the other sports cars in this price range are well sorted and confident inspiring. I honestly believe the suspension/chassis set-up on this car is NOT fitting for its price tag.

LOL don't buy one - if its so poor, how did Jorg Burmeister manage to do a ~ 7min lap

However, struts all round do limit the car.

The major advantage of steelies over ceramics for track time is the massive range of brake pads you can choose from - allowing you to select for optimum initial bite and modulation.

How do you find the Garmin Catalyst relative to other systems e.g. Racelogic or even Track Precision?
