Anyone move from a 2nd gen R8 to a 718 4.0?

@Southpaw I am not being hyperbolic here, honestly I have grown a lot as a result of my experience of owning the R8 and driving in day in day out... there is a difference between a weekend with a car and using it daily as a sports car...
as I said the R8 had the wow factor but it got boring quickly and I found mayself gravitating back to Porsche even though their are more common and have more pedestrian specifications, they just feel better in a long term relationship

I also agree that most Audis have no character. I give the R8 a little bit of a pass since it's co-developed with Lamborghini. But let's be real, a Macan isn't exactly oozing with character either. I had one as a loaner and it was painfully boring to drive.

I can certainly agree that Porsches make better long-term partners. I know first-hand why their owners are so passionate. I just wouldn't choose any or all 911's/718's. In the OP's scenario, I'd choose the R8 but there are plenty of other Porsches I'd choose over the R8. Heck, I'd love to add a manual 718 Spyder one day. But realistically, I'd likely add something air-cooled one day.

OP must also consider if a manual is a must-have because if so, this is a factor for him.

One more thing for OP to consider is others can't live your automotive journey for you...
in other words you may well have to go through an R8 v10 and find out for yourself and grow and understand your unique preferences as they will differ from others'
there is no absolute truth here only relatives and it's a journey ... enjoy it

Car guys will forever be going, was that a TT? The current Gen R8 is so rare I didn't even know they made it still until someone on here posted about it earlier this year. I also think anyone who isn't a car guy won't even notice it unless you get a wild color which could be a pro or a con.
If you're cross shopping a R8 and a 718 it's a bit odd too IMO. It's like logic and sensibility says get the R8 to impress your peers with quoting numbers but deep down you want the 718 for fun. I say that as someone who cross shopped a NSX (probably a the best cross shop for a R8) and a GT4.
I do think it's likely a legitimately good car. As much as I hate audis, I did work for them, and did get to spend a decent amount of time with the previous gen r8 (gated and dct. audi actually dropped off a dct one for the dealership to bag the crap out of for a month). Audi tends to put their efforts into not screwing up their upper end models, so while the a/s4 a/s5 a6 are rusty junk that falls apart, their upper tier cars I thought were really good.

Definitely quality is very good on R8 as are many things, as in too good and clinical ...

This is a Porsche forum so you already know what people are going to say...
But IMO, the 4.0 is the only variant of the 718 I'd want but in this comparison, I'm still taking the R8. Very subjective but I prefer some HP and the sound in the V10. I also like the looks of the gen 2 R8. I don't even notice a 718 on the road since they're commonly seen. If you have to have a manual, then the 718 will give you that option. I know everyone has different things they look for in a car and you may not care about the factors above.
I see people bringing up other variants of the R8 but the R8 RWS is a bit more driver focused than other variants. Stripped down and RWD which is appealing as a backroad racer and that's the appeal of certain Porsche variants too.
Regardless of the brand, it's tough not to like a mid-engined, NA V10, RWD. That's unique in and of itself.

But honestly that's about all about the R8 that really appeals to me. I don't like its bigger size, worse clearance, less practicality, how much attention it gets (although I do like its looks more than the 718) and the lack of a manual is a big one for me, especially with such lame paddle shifters.
So the question is how much am I willing to give up to experience that V10?

You gotta experience v10 once in your life
try to make it as inexpensive as possible haha, consider flying to Vegas and renting it for a week. You will get it out of your system

No one is arguing that a normally aspirated v10 is a glorious engine. I have owned 2 m5 v10 and an M6 v10 and loved driving the R8 v10.
there is nothing like it, the point of this debate though is how will you feel in the morning?
meaning once you have had the Audi R8 v10 for a week to a few months of enjoying the v10, does the car feel like a keeper or just a box you had to check
in my case it's the latter, the R8 just never felt magical enough as any Porsche 911 or boxster/cayman feels day in and day out.. they are genuine sports cars that connect to your heart, the R8 never did, V10 or not, gated manual or R-tronic or S-tronic and I suspect whether awd, rwd or fwd lol...
i would take a 996 c2 over any iteration of the R8

I have a good friend who had a 991.1 GTS manual and a 2015 r8 v10 gated at the same time. He said connected with the GTS and that he enjoyed it more as a driver's car, and when he had to sell one he sold the R8.
I think the R8 has a real appeal for those who value things other then a pure connected driving experience, like its looks and immense power from that v10.
But for me I am really about a pure connected driving experience and I feel like I might end up feeling like you did once the novelty of the v10 wears off (especially since I enjoy the engagement of a manual), and that would be a pricey experiment with the sales tax we have to pay up here in Ontario (13%)!

Probably similar responses as your earlier post….
You should get the Audi, that will satisfy the curiosity

Have had several iterations of the R8, including the RWS.
Now I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 and no regrets. In fact, I have a Boxster GTS 4.0 ordered. Even the 992 has become too clinical and too large. I prefer a nimble sports car, not a fast grand tourer.

I have moved off of a gated R8 and focused on the gen 2 (for a few reasons) and the lack of a manual in the gen 2 sways it even more towards the 4.0
