Good point. The truth is, if there's a fire, I'm walking away from the car - running, actually. It's insured. I figure I'd probably more then likely use it on someone else's car, or MAYBE use it on a fire caused by/at the brakes.
I off-roaded for many years and everyone carrier fire extinguishers. Old jeeps in the woods tend to start fires. I never used or saw anyone use an extinguisher.
But they look so cool in our cars!

If you spill gas on it, don’t you still need to clean it? Or is it more for protecting the paint from the pump?
I always carry a spray bottle of detailer in my car, so not sure about adding this.
I am always interested in what kind of detailer everyone uses. What are you carrying with you? I use McKees 37 N-914 for a rinseless wash and I also carry a bottle of Nextzett Blitz (1:256 dilution iirc for APC).
Do you often get gas in NJ where you can't pump it yourself? I've never dribbled gas on my car (and haven't peed my pants since I was 4). I could use a bib for eating marinara sauce, but I don't see a purpose for refueling unless you live in NJ. My father and sister live in NJ, but I never purchase gas there. I refuse, and always fill up at the PA border when I visit them. If I lived in NJ maybe I'd get a gas bib. No, actually I'd move to another state...

I don't let them pump when I'm in NJ. I just do it myself. Once, maybe 30 years ago, an attendant fought me on it. I told him to call a cop and just went on doing it myself. I was young and rude.
Also, Huntington Township here on Long Island (which is large and near me) has the same law. But no one ever complains when I pump my own gas. Frankly, when they see a nice car and an obviously "concerned" owner outside the car ready to do it myself, they don't object. Less work for them, and less of a chance of getting yelled at for spilling gas on the car.
Do I need this thing? No. It is cool/cute/funny to talk about and obsess over? Heck yea! Not unlike my fire extinguisher. Will it ever get used? Not likely. But it's cool to have because, well, we CAN have one from the factory.

Serious, I don't know how militant you would have to be but the last time I was in Oregon I had to let 'them' pump the gas... Generally we are passing through on a road trip and try to have a full tank before crossing the state line.
I accidentally started to pump my own gas once in Oregon and the gas station dude got pretty upset at me.

I spend summers in Jersey and use the same station for almost all my gas, so they know me. I pump my own and tip the attendant each time. If I'm at a different station I simply ask the attendant to allow me to insert, monitor and remove the nozzle. They are always happy to oblige and I also respond with a small tip.

I use Wolfgang Über SiO2 Silica Spray like a detailer and every few months the Wolfgang PROFI Ceramic Booster to help the ceramics.
