Yesterday, I picked up my friend after his shift in the hospital (sonographer) in the GT4. I drove us to dinner, all was good. After eating, I asked him if he wanted to drive (big mistake!), and we took off. We went to an undeveloped area, and I let him get used to the car a bit, and afterwards showed him how to do launch control. We spend about 5 min just messing around doing launches, then turn around at a dead end to do one more. He plants his foot on the brake, revs it up, and I instantly saw that the wheel was turned completely to the left and facing straight to the bushes.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I immediately reach over and correct the wheel straight and tell the man he nearly just sent us in the bushes.

Looking back at all the people I've introduced to my performance cars, it's hilarious but scary to recall all their moments of naivety and general lack of awareness. Most people just really don't understand driving, beyond curbing their Toyotas on the way to pick up more pudding from the grocery.

I don't think I'm going to let people drive my cars anymore.

 

I follow the man code of not asking to drive another man's prized possession (car) and in return, I rely on "Car-ma" to not have anybody ask to drive my car. I did ask my wife if she wanted to drive the car today because if we're going to be doing some road trips, I'd like to hand off the car for her to drive so I can rest but she declined. She said, "it's too stressful to drive your car." I will say that you do have to be more alert when driving because of the front lip and low profile tires.

 

It's really difficult to say "no", right? There is no graceful way to do it other than just say you're sorry, but you don't let people take your wife/partner for a test spin, too. It's the same kind of love, only different, lol.

 

This is it. I've always said that driving someone elses car is like test driving their wife. Not allowed. My wife and I decided quickly after buying our Cayman that only she and I we're allowed to drive it. We don't offer a drive, we won't allow a drive either.

 

My father once told me this half jokingly:

There are 3 things that you don’t lend to your friends if you really treasure them:

Your wife.

Your car.

Your camera. (Real ones, before all the digital ones now)

This comment always make me ponder.

 

Can someone explain the analogy of why you don't lend a real camera? I never understood this one, albeit I'm also not a photography enthusiast.

 

my guess is that it is an easily lendable item because it’s portable, also very mechanical and fragile. And if you had a good one chances are it was one of the more expensive household items that people owned back in the ‘olden days’

 

I asked my lady friend if she would like to drive my still very new GTS, knowing she drove a manual Honda S2000 throughout college yrs ago. I did insist she observe the way I drove it for several miles first. I must say, she did every bit as good as I do with takeoffs and shifting through the gears. I was pleasantly shocked at how smooth she was!

 

IIRC, older cameras had mirrors inside that where somewhat fragile and prone to breakage if dropped.

 

I've let other people drive my cars and was lucky nothing happened to the car or to other people... but definitely will not let anybody drive this car. Maybe my friend who has tracked everything from two to four wheels

 

I was driving with a friend at Laguna Seca a few years ago and he asked if I wanted to drive his brand new ZO6. I told him never let anyone drive your car, especially at a race track. Towards the end of the day his driving coach asked if he could take it out and on the first lap he put it in the wall at the top of the cork screw. Live and learn.

I "let" my wife drive it once...I mean, technically it's half hers, right? Hard to say "No." when considering this. She daily drives a manual GTI, so she did just fine. Whew!

Friends/Others??? Ya right.

 

Interesting conversation.

I never let anyone drive my cars anymore. When I got an m3 a long time ago, I let someone who has track experience drive my car..he took it to 100mph in a 40 on my street. Let someone drove my sti, he took is to 80+ right on a busy road.

Haven't let anyone drive my cars in 10+ years. Never again. They drive it like they stole it.

When someone asks me if they want me to drive their car, I politely refuse. I'll just sit as a passenger and share their joy. No point in driving with white knuckles

 

I will only let two people drive my sports cars.

My G/F, since I also drive her car a lot and if you are in a relationship, you share things/experiences. There is however a "discussion" that happens before hand of Do's and Don'ts.

AND one buddy of mine who is also a car guy and does autoX often and has a healthy respect for other's cars and performance cars in general. He has let me drive his cars and I have let him drive mine.
