Wow 31-40 leading… lots of ‘new money’ out there it seems. Congrats to everyone who’s managing to get into these cars under 40.

Seems many 4.0 owners in the 40ish age range, like myself, have a shared past with BMW. Not too surprising as we came of age when BMW were at their peak (late 90's to early 2010's).
My love affair with them began in my early 20's and continues on through today, but for the older stuff. Like many have said, I feel the F87 M2 is the newest BMW I would ever consider owning. I just have zero desire for anything else they produce. The styling, size, weight, and feel of the cars no longer appeals to me. I feel like they've lost their way (or moved on from what I considered to be their core principles).
Having been bit by the Porsche bug since my early 30's, however, I just can't imagine not having a P-car as the "sports car" in my stable. I feel BMWs (E39/E46/E92/F87 M cars) are the perfect fun daily commuter car and a great compliment to a more serious sports car like a Porsche, but not a replacement for them.
My ideal normal guy garage (not counting the wife's car):
Sports car - manual transmission, naturally aspirated engine, bespoke sports car platform = Cayman/Boxster/911
Fun daily - manual transmission or dual clutch, torquey engine a plus (naturally aspirated or FI), 2 or 4 doors but needs a back seat for fun cruises with my small family = BMW M cars mentioned above
Winter/beater car - same as fun daily driver but AWD a plus = B8/8.5 Audi 3.0T S4/S5, BMW E82 with winter tires
I'm now at the point in life where I've owned enough cars over the last 20 years, that I know exactly what I do and don't like, and have begun returning to cars I've owned in the past.
Currently have the GT4 and E82, just need to find another E92/E90 M3.

EDIT: Here are some pics of my M3 and my M4. As you can see, I spec everything in black black, lol. I don't know why I am this way...

Yeah, you are right. I had an F80 and then the G82 before I got my GT4. Don't get me wrong, they were really cool cars, but they are not the same tools. The M3 (either F80 or G80) makes way more sense to purchase since it has a proper backseat, whereas the G82 was long and heavy but still inconvenient to get people in and out of. G80 with AWD is the perfect daily driver with kids, especially in the midwest. I would get it as the supplemental car to my GT4 in a heartbeat, to be honest. I would not get a G82, G87, or F87, however. I've always been a huge M fan since I was a child, so I was really excited when I purchased these cars. With that said, I cannot even compare them to the GT4, nor should I (despite the GT4 and the M4 both having 2 doors).

Agreed , F80 is much more raw and had 2 of them and makes a fantastic daily driver with back seat. Last yr i had a G82 allocation and did not take it when i drove a manual G82 and the car was great and very fast but felt like a heavy car and so long . The clutch was super light and hated it , did not feel connected.

76, first was a 61 356B I bought for $900. 37 Porsches have come and gone since plus the occasional BMW, Corvette, Lotus, Cobra. This is one of my favorites and shares garage space with a 83 SC.

Well my Rennlist.com internet buddy not this soon to be (June 2023) 78-year old.
Porsche PDK 7-Speed tranny for this fellow and after 7,000 miles I can say it's the ULTIMATE transmission in all respects is my opinion.

I did Euro delivery on a Sakhir 2018 F80 ZCP. Last of the manuals, I thought. Great car and even better family trip. I got it as a forever car but life circumstances changed and it was not a good all-highway commuter and not the best weekend-only sportscar. So I sold it after 4 years and the BGTS will make a better toy. THAT will be a forever car.
The F80 was great, but it was at its best when really giving it the beans. It got sharper, smaller, better. Problem is, it was hard to drive it that way around town. At low speeds it felt large, numb, loud, and heavy. It always looked and sounded great.

Three Wheelin'
@manifold danger The amount of money you'll save going to the F87 M2 Competition, you'll lose in gas costs as the M2C has a gas tank the size of a carton of milk.
Jokes aside, this was the car i owned before getting my GT4. It was a pretty great daily driver (minus the super small gas tank and incredibly low gas mileage, i think i averaged 18 in Normal mode). Torque up the wazoo everywhere (peak torque at 1300 RPM) and just power power power.
Personally for me that wasn't the driving experience i really wanted. I like NA engines and the linear power they deliver. Your drive mode is your right foot. Personally though, my favorite BMW experience was in the Toyota Supra.
