From the factory, what tires came with your new Cayman? Michelin? Pirelli? Other?

Wow, awesome to have such a great driving road so close to home, well close to the lake house anyway.

Drive the Dunlop's, most who have tried the second generation Race 2's are very impressed...

With those 80 wear rated Dunlop tires it will not be long before you will be shopping for replacement tires. I like the Michelin Sport Cup 2s as long as the weather is warm and the roads are dry.

Unfortunately, the rating that is of the most interest to consumers is the one that appears to be the least consistent. While the Treadwear Grade was originally intended to be assigned purely scientifically, it has also become a marketing tool used by manufacturers to help position and promote their tires.
The problem with UTQG Treadwear Grades is that they are open to some interpretation on the part of the tire manufacturer because they are assigned after the tire has only experienced a little treadwear as it runs the 7,200 miles. This means that the tire manufacturers need to extrapolate their raw wear data when they are assigning Treadwear Grades, and that their grades can to some extent reflect how conservative or optimistic their marketing department is. Typically, comparing the Treadwear Grades of tire lines within a single brand is somewhat helpful, while attempting to compare the grades between different brands is not as helpful.

If your driving style and situation don't favor Cup-2 tires then you have nothing to apologize for, we all have different expectations and should match the tire to that. I drive my Spyder all year round, there are certainly times when a Cup tire (mine came with Race 2) is not the right choice. So what I did was to buy a second set of wheels, one for summer and another for the rest of the year, that set has Bridgestone RE980AS tires, they are perfect for just about everything except possibly the track, in fact if I could only have one tire on the car for the street it would be this tire. There is a thread here discussing this in detail and a number of us have these on Spyders and GT4's and are still enjoying every bit of these cars! I can did up that thread and share or PM if you would like details. As for those Cup 2's, they will be an easy sell, they are a good tire for their intended market.
