To me the 2.5L is more suited for the S/GTS; whereas, GT4/Spyder, 4.0.
2.5L daily, driving around town, don’t need to ring it out to have fun with the low end torque.
4.0L, have to get past 5K rpm to feel that torque. But the GT4 is a race car for the street, so that’s expected and when you reach the upper band, it’s just subliminal.
I’ve owned a 718 GTS (2.5L) and now GT4. And during the earlier break in period under 4K rpm, it was no bueno.
So I can kinda see Janko’s POV.

When you say the GT4 was "no bueno" when compared to the 2.5 under 4k was it really that different?

As some one who traded in their <10,000 mile CGTS 2.5 for a GT4, I can say that I liked my 2.5 GTS very much, mostly driven by the chassis and balance. I came from prior AMG mercs, so even though the 2.5 was torqy at low range, it was nothing to write home about compared to my prior cars. The communicative chassis though, whole another ballgame. I did not dislike the engine sound. But in 6 months of using it in and off track, I never truely had the urge to Turn it on and listen to it. I researched a lot of exhaust mods, but nothing changed the character, just amplified the sound.
since breaking in my GT4, I can tell that the throttle response is not quite as intense in low ranges but more immediate, which is more enjoyable to me. I have had no urge to listen to radio since installing cargraphic controller as I find the intake noise with open exhaust quite satisfying. Overall, I think even in daily driving conditions, I find it to be more fun car compared to my prior cGTS2.5.
I think all the talk of 4.0 not suited for cayman chassis is to create discussion on forums and generate views. All caymans apart from the current gen have had flat 6s and no one ever thought it was not suited for chassis.

Just to be clear: overall I still prefer the GT4 and has enough torque down low. I was just speaking in relative terms having owned a 718 GTS 2.5L and modded 991.2 GTS. Yes it is that noticeable compared to those two. But I much prefer the sound and response of the 4.0.

I had a 2.5 gts and now a 4.0 gts. 2.5 was definitely fast especially just under 3000 when you noticed a surge of torque. Didn’t sound bad to me either. It was my first turbo engine and while I didn’t appreciate much lag esp in sport mode, the throttle sensitivity and precision just wasn’t there. With the 4.0 you can modulate the throttle and get as much or little input as you would like with an exactly proportional increase (or decrease) in speed and revs. With the 2.5 you accelerate, wait for a very small but noticeable amount of time, and then get a surge ot torque which isn’t as easy to modulate at just under 3000 rpm. It is this lack of throttle precision which makes me happy to be back in a naturally aspirated engine the most. The greatly improved sound is just icing on the cake.
In regard to the chasis - GTS chasis especially with Sport PASM (SPASM) is perfect for the street. Sporty enough but less road noise, better comfort, and improved ground clearance compared to the GT suspension which is obviously preferable on track. I don’t notice a real difference in ground clearance or comfort between PASM and SPASM, but I definitely notice improved handling and an overall sporty character for SPASM over PASM.
You can find some great deals on 2.5 GTS and it is a solid car, but if you can get whatever you want the 4.0 GTS with SPASM in my opinion will give you the most fun on the road (especially in a manual!).
