Oh That Awful Sound
Driving down the coast today, in light traffic, cruising in 4th at about 3k RPM when I hear this awful sound coming from the engine. Loud baritone, sounds like a semi downshifting. I accelerate up and it disappears. On and off throttle a bit. It’s gone. Phew. Still concerned.
Few minutes later, there it is again. Like the engine’s dropped a cylinder...and then I realize...that I forgot to turn off AS/S. Holy Shiite does that thing sound awful. Never again will I forget that.

Agreed, it is a terrible sound that is certainly not worth saving 1% or whatever miniscule amount of overall fuel consumption. After all, buyers chose to spend a heck of a lot of $ to have a nice flat 6 sound instead of a 4cyl, so to ruin the auditory signature with cylinder deactivation just doesn't make sense (though I know, emissions...). Annoying to have to press the button every start up.

Yep - it’s decidedly unpleasant - the engine equivalent of nails on blackboard 😬

Funny that some reviewers commented that ‘you can barely tell, it’s so seamless...’. What a joke. It’s anything but.

There is no permanent off unless you go aftermarket.

So they changed it from my 2015 because the AS/S selection always stayed at the last setting. I pressed the button, which turns off AS/S when I took delivery and didn’t touch it for 5 years. Sport, OTOH required a push every time.
AS/S = Auto Start Stop, correct?

Yes you are correct, I never did turn the switch on on my 2015 CS . It seems the lords of the nanny state have decided that is too much power for us little people to have.
It seems if you have a PWIS and are tach savvy one can convince the electrons to go to sleep. I bet a Porsche tech could make some moon lighting bucks doing this Although I probably would not want to do it during the warranty period, of course by that time my index finger would be collapsed down to the knuckle from stomping the button. At least we still can turn it off at least for this model year...

I’m totally fine with the exhaust. It sounds epic above 4k and quiet below, which is perfect for me. The only thing I’m having to get used to is the mechanical tapping from, I assume, the throttle bodies. Though even that seems to be quieting.
I have to say, this car is epic in the midrange and the gearing is perfect for the street IMO. I have a 350 mile loop that takes me through some of the roads the car mags use for testing, that I plan on taking the GT4 through soon.

So just to be clear, (I don’t have my car yet), you start your car and immediately push the button to disable it? And it lights up when “off”?
And you need to do this every time (unless you install an aftermarket module)?

Not only does it sound awful and when you press the throttle, you can feel the switch back to 6 easily, but there’s a horrendous vibration at cruising speeds on the highway. It’s undriveable with the vibration and drone.

Need to check this out. I've always shut it off as part of start up. Hate auto start stop. You should feel it in the 2019 Cayenne. Shuts off on a three point turn in reverse. Wonder if Spyder would do that.
