O.K. I think I have this correct but with 3 questions:
The original Boxster was the 986
The original Cayman was the 987
The next gen cars were 981 (Boxster & Cayman)
The 4 cyl. turboed machines ( Boxster & Cayman) were named 718 after the historic Porsche 4 cylinder racer, Were these also labeled 982?
What is the actual nomenclature for the 6 cylinder 718 GTS 4.0? Is it a 718.1 or some other 9XX number like a 981.X?
TIA,
Pat D

Correct, the 718 name is from the past, but it doesn't designate the current generation Boxster/Caymans: Boxster and Caymans (turbo and NA 6) are 982's; GTS 4.0 is still a 982. There was no facelift in this generation of Boxster/Cayman, so there isn't a 982.2.

718 is a marketing number, they stuck it on the bumper. The 986/987/981 where never in any marketing materials from Porsche, these are the internal/engineering generation numbers. For model specific parts you buy for a 718 will start with 982. The cars also have 991 parts in them.
here's the link to download the Porsche PET (parts catalog). The individual catalogs are Cayman 718 (982) and Boxter 718 (982).

Porsche kind of made things confusing. IMHO the 982 should have been 981.2. Let’s face it, it’s a visual facelift. Maybe the platform changes to utilize the 4 cylinder warranted the 982 designation? But then what about the models with the 4.0 (Spyder, GT4, GTS)? I do know Porsche revised nearly every exterior body panel minus the Frunk, windshield and Trunk... but the changes were so minor... but due to technicalities it makes it a full change to 982? Oh well doesn’t really matter. Makes me wonder though what the next rumored facelift will be? 982.2? Then the electric will be 983? BTW did you guys see the facelift Macan? Interior will now have that horrible haptic piano black console replacing the buttons! Wonder if the 982.2 will get it as well? I can see it getting that and the newer PCM as well. That’s if the 982.2 gets approved?
