Smoking package? Is it the only way to get 12v to use with battery maintainer?

I have three Porsche’s plugged into the lighter socket. Two are the older Porsche charger and one is the newer one. The older one is way better. It has a very thin long cord (speaker wire thickness) that can easily either be fed through the window or closed in the door. The newer one is much thicker and needs to go through the window. I have indoor Porsche covers and find the thinner/longer cord better. They keep my batteries charged.

You aren't pushing a lot of amperage with a maintainer so going through the 12v outlet is fine. I find it easier to put a pigtail on the battery that gives me access without removing the plastic. It also keeps the wiring in view so I remember to disconnect before driving.

On newer cars, the car can go into a "sleep" mode that disables the center plug (smoking package one). The workaround is to lock the car or just use the plug in the footwell. Maybe he was talking about that?

Use the Porsche battery charger. Plugs into any socket in the car. I use the smoker outlet to plug my radar detector. You can charge through the outlet in the passenger side footwell.
